About this title

Synopsis

During the day, teachers spend all of their time helping their apprentices. But when the children are asleep, the night is theirs to do as they please. Qifrey and his friend Olruggio especially look forward to when this time arrives; for them, the witching hours are meant to create unique and delicious meals for everyone in the atelier to enjoy. This is especially true for Coco, who has no special abilities as a witch at first, but he continues to encourage her until she can draw magic skillfully. He is protective of all his disciples, as seen from how he protects them from being taken by Easthies and the Knights Moralis. However, Qifrey is overly obsessed with his goal to locate the Brimmed Caps and his gentle attitude is occasionally overshadowed by this buried resentment. This was his primary motivation for taking Coco as his apprentice, as she serves as a sure lead to the Brimmed Caps. This grudge is a hidden facet to the light-hearted and kind personality Qifrey demonstrates to his pupils and colleagues. Qifrey is actually frightened of water and dislikes being wet, he learned to manipulate it as a method of conquering his fear of it. He has a gruff way of speaking, but his magic is often described as "warm." He has created a lot of contraptions, such as the Glowstone Path, the Snugstone and the Searneedle Wand etc, and is well known among his fellow witches for his inventions. While he initially comes off as blunt and harsh, Olruggio is a genuinely kind and caring person. He looks after Qifrey and the students of the atelier, coming up with magical items to help them sleep and helping the students with their magic. This kindness doesn’t just apply to people Olruggio knows— he helps out local villagers so frequently that the nobility of said villages and cities take note and seem almost jealous. Olruggio’s kindness towards others forces him to begin to question the laws of witch society, specifically laws against witches practicing medicine and introducing non-witches to magic. Whenever someone brings up Olruggio’s warm actions, he tries to brush it off as something anyone would do or simply part of his work as a Watchful Eye. Olruggio is notoriously bad with deadlines and overworks himself, staying up late at night to finish commissions. He is often tired and sometimes shows a haggard face with dark circles. Due to these bad habits, he sometimes sleeps on the couch of the Atelier, oversleeps, or even misses events. Despite this, he insists on the importance of sleep to Qifrey's apprentices. He is easily flustered and will lie about not liking praise. While at first he loudly opposed the girls calling him their professor, he stops complaining about it during the story, only occasionally telling other people they are not his pupils. During his time in the Great Hall as an apprentice, Olruggio meets Qifrey and the two become fast friends. Olruggio helps Qifrey with his investigations into the Brimmed Caps, later helping him conquer the Tower of Tomes, though not managing to enter the library himself. Eventually, the two of them move out of the Great Hall and into Qifrey's Atelier. Olruggio helps Qifrey find his apprentices, and is present during their first encounter with Richeh. Brushbuddy is fond of him. He's seen playing with the creature, who also climbs on him, and rocks around happily when he comes back in the Great Hall. According to a sketch page by Shirahama Kamome, Olruggio enjoys strong yet sweet alcoholic drinks. The diamond design featured on Olruggio's cap is also worn by many other Ghodrey citizens, such as a younger Utowin and his father.
