Synopsis

Shinrei Tantei Yakumo tells a story about a college student, Saitou Yakumo who is born with different eye colors. His red left eye gives him a special ability to see ghosts and spirits. He believes ghosts and spirits are bound to earth because of a certain "cause," and simply eliminating that "cause" will let those spirits rest in peace. Haruka is a second year university student. Her twin sister died in a car accident when she was seven years old which she blames herself for, seeing as her sister was chasing a ball she threw onto the road. She asks Yakumo to save her friend Miki from demons possesing her. She is the first person who is not frightened of Yakumo's different eyes or his ability to see ghosts. She even says they are beautiful, as Yakumo's uncle once predicted. Because of Yakumo, she is able to see her twin sister who died in an car accident when she was seven years old. Haruka seems to have some feelings toward Yakumo, which developed into some kind of crush.

Detective Kazutoshi Gotou is a middle-aged clumsy workaholic detective. He is an action over words/thinking person. He knows Yakumo from a long time ago. He considers Yakumo like family and worries about him despite how he often gets angry at Yakumo for his contrary attitude. He asks for Yakumo's help whenever there is a paranormal involvement in the case he's investigating in. Detective who works under Detective Gotou and who starts out loving the supernatural but after experiencing it first hand is scared of the supernatural. However, he still remains very interested in supernatural phenomena, at times suggesting the causes behind events are because of it. Although Gotou doesn't think too highly of Ishii, Miyawaka and Yakumo thinks highly of Ishii. Throughout the series, Ishii slowly changes into a person more sure and confident of his abilities, even later starting to voice his opinions against Gotou.
