He made his first appearance in the game "Sonic the Hedgehog" for the Sega Genesis in 1991. Though he enjoys lazing around and simply enjoying himself, most of the games focus on the main antagonist Dr. Robotnik attempting to take over the world, only to be stopped by Sonic and occasionally several of his friends every time. His best friend is Miles Prower, more commonly called Tails. Acting as somewhat of a sidekick and slowly maturing into more of a partner as the games go on, the young fox has a knack for inventing things and other machinery. Lots of times he'll also team up with Knuckles the Echidna, guardian of the Master Emerald. He's been called his rival on several occasions and the two get along well (most of the time). Sonic is prideful and hates to be constrained, enjoying freedom and doing things at his own pace (which is always incredibly fast). Though he is cocky and rather impatient, he is someone who would never turn their back on a friend in need or to protect the greater good (on several occasions performing actions that nearly result in his death). Sonic mainly fights by curling into a ball and spinning at high speeds (known as the Spinball, Spin Dash, etc). He is also a master in Capoeira (a Brazilian martial art).

He is a young, male, golden-yellow, anthropomorphic fox with two tails (similar to the mythological kitsune, or "yoko," which was often depicted with up to nine), hence the nickname. He is able to use his two tails to propel himself into the air like a helicopter for a limited time. His debut was in October 16, 1992, taking part in the 8-bit version of Sonic the Hedgehog 2; the 16-bit version was released that November. Viewing Sonic as somewhat of an older brother, Tails looks up to the hedgehog and aspires to be like him. Though lacking confidence in his abilities as well as experience, Tails does things in a more logical sense than Sonic, often using his ability with machines to turn the tides. (Source: Wikipedia)

He is always attempting to destroy parts of the world to make it home to his super-city so he can then attain world domination, only to be stopped by Sonic and his friends every time. On two occasions he has used a scientific experiment and an ancient monster to achieve his plans, both of which fail (Shadow the Hedgehog and Chaos, respectively). He doesn't fight himself all that often and usually builds robots to carry out his dirty work, powered by small animals. Some of his more notable inventions include the Egg Carrier (a flying fortress), the Death Egg (a space station), the Egg Mobile (his aerial transportation vehicle), Metal Sonic (a robotic clone of Sonic), among many other things. His grandfather was also a genius scientist, Gerald Robotnik, who originally created Shadow the Hedgehog via Black Doom's DNA.
