Synopsis

Mikado City, an otherwise peaceful city, is suddenly invaded after a gate from another world opens seemingly from nowhere. Interdimensional monsters called Neighbors attack, man-made weapons prove to be ineffective against them, and the city is quickly destroyed. When all hope appears to be lost, a mysterious group known as the Border Defense Agency begins to retaliate using specialized technology called Triggers and manages to halt the invasion. Four years later, the organization continues to protect the populace of Mikado City and are now revered as heroes. Yuuma Kuga is a new student at First Mikado City High School—a school associated with Border—which comes as a surprise, as transfers to the dangerous areas are seen as suspicious. He is soon targeted by bullies, but Border's member-in-training Osamu Mikumo stands up for Yuuma, despite his doubts about him. The two's situation turns grim when a Neighbor arrives from a gate that abruptly opens in the forbidden zone; while Osamu struggles to fend it off with his Trigger, Yuuma defeats it with ease. As Osamu inquires about Yuuma's position in Border, it turns out that Yuuma is no agent—but a Neighbor himself. [Written by MAL Rewrite]

Publication notes

World Trigger was temporarily put on hiatus in November 2016 due to the author's poor health. The manga continued serialization on October 29, 2018. The series has been published in English by VIZ Media under the Shonen Jump imprint since October 7, 2014. It has also been simulpub digitally through MANGA Plus. World Trigger has been published in French by Kazé since October 22, 2014; and in Italian by Edizioni Star Comics since January 10, 2015. The manga was adapted into a Japanese live stage play titled World Trigger the Stage, which was shown from November 19, 2021, to November 28, 2021. A sequel show titled World Trigger the Stage: Daikibo Shinkouhen was performed from August 5, 2022, to August 14, 2022. Two video games based on the series were released; developed by Artdink, World Trigger: Borderless Mission was published on September 17, 2015, for the PlayStation Vita. A smartphone game titled World Trigger: Smash Borders was developed by Ganbarion and published on July 21, 2015; it was later rereleased for the PlayStation Vita on February 17, 2016.

Yuuma is very short for his age. He has white hair and red eyes. He wears a blue suit top and gray bottoms traditional of Japanese high school students. When not in Trigger mode or school uniform, he usually wears a black hoodie with a paw symbol and the text "UMA" (which stands for "Unidentified Mysterious Animal"), and baggy jeans pants. In Black Trigger mode Yuuma gains a black jumpsuit which Replica fuses itself with. In C-Class trigger mode, unlike most other trainees, he gains an all-black uniform, instead of the classical all-white one; it has a black jacket with thick white stripes running down from the sides of his collar to the sides of his sleeves and also around his collar, and thin gray stripes in the borders of the zip fastener and collar. In B-Class trigger mode, he has a uniform similar to Osamu's, except his jacket's left sleeve doesn't have a shoulder guard. His right arm also has the same design as his left, unlike Osamu's, making his jacket more symmetrical. Also, the black stripes on his jacket's sleeves are thinner and, unlike Osamu's, don't have white stripes in their middle, and the black stripes also go over his shoulders and collar. On the sides of his shoulders, he has Tamakoma Branch emblem, surrounded by the stripes. In addition, the sleeves of his jacket somewhat merge with his gloves, and he tucks his pants inside his boots, like when he was a C-Class agent. His Unit's emblem is located on his left chest. Yuuma has a laid back personality and is not very knowledgable about Japanese customs, due to being from another world (despite having a Japanese father), leading to some run-ins with rough people. He is logical, advising Mikumo to stay away from the Trion Battle Soldier rather than save the students as Mikumo could die. He seems to be aligned with Border's cause, fighting against Neighbor forces. Despite his happy exterior, he is actually deeply depressed due to his father's sacrifice to revive him, and had no more reason to live for other than bringing him back to life. Yuuichi has brown hair and blue eyes. He wears a sunglasses on top of his head. He is always wearing his Border uniform, a blue jacket with a long black stripe going down the middle of each sleeve. He seems to enjoy Bonchiage, and is frequently seen eating them. Yuuichi has a laid back demeanor, even in situations when he is called out for being an antagonist, such as hiding and protecting a humanoid Neighbor. His favorite food being rice crackers, he always has a bag in his hand wherever he goes, offering some to everyone, even people he once fought with. Despite losing his mother to a Neighbor, he thinks that not all Neighbors are bad guys. In fact, he thinks humans and Neighbors should become friends, showing that both races could co-exist. Yuuichi always acts like a carefree person, but in order to protect his friends being threatened, he shows a much more serious side. He joined the Border after Jin saved him. He is usually referred as simply "Four Eyes" by people outside the Mikumo Squad. He is later promoted into B-Rank and later became a Shooter and the leader of the Mikumo Squad. Osamu is a very honest person, as noted by Yuuma Kuga who has the ability to discern lies and is thus very trusting of Osamu. Osamu is very determined and courageous always going out of his way to help others even if it puts himself in harm's way. He has a strong sense of justice. Chika is very shy, and rarely says much. She has very few friends, because she voluntarily distances herself from others. She believes that she'll just get hurt when those she gets close to get kidnapped by the Neighbors. She is really patient and serious and can concentrate very well, but she has low confidence and can't see her own potential. After meeting Yuuma and joining Tamakoma Branch, however, she starts warming up to others and becoming more sociable and confident on herself.
