Synopsis

A seemingly ordinary modern day teenager, Yuri, is suddenly whisked away to the Hittite empire in ancient Anatolia, where an ambitious queen wants the girl for a blood sacrifice in order to murder all heirs but her son, thus seizing control of the throne. Luckily, the timely intervention of Prince Kail saves Yuri from the queen's grasp. Kail promises to send Yuri back to her home, but the queen's persistent schemes to kill them both, plus their growing feelings for each other, keep those plans delayed. Sora wa Akai Kawa no Hotori won the 46th Shogakukan Manga Award in the Shoujo category in 2000. The series was published in English as Red River by VIZ Media under the Shojo Beat imprint from May 26, 2004, to January 12, 2010, and as 3-in-1 omnibus volumes since October 15, 2024.

The main character of the story. Only fifteen at the start of the series, Yuri is confident and willing to take up any charitable cause. As she possesses knowledge far greater than any woman of the time (such as recognition of iron and knowledge of 20th century medical practices and hygiene), and often seems to find herself in situations that "prove" she is Ishtar, she is often considered to have divine powers and is thought by most to be the living incarnation of the goddess of love and war, Ishtar. As such, she is often referred to as Yuri Ishtar (ユーリ・イシュタル, Yuri Ishtar?). Despite this, she is tomboyish, preferring to dress in men's clothing for the sake of practicality, much to the consternation and dismay of her handmaids. She is an accomplished gymnast, and during her stay in Hattusa, she learns the art of sword fighting and archery, so that she can better help Kail, and survive on her own.

The third prince of the Hittite empire, son of King Suppililiuma and the second Tawananna, Queen Hinti. At the beginning of the series, he finds Yuri running frantically from guards, and gives her the gift of understanding and speaking their language by way of a kiss. He finds Yuri to be quite unlike any woman he has ever met, and promises to help her find a way home to Japan, while struggling with his own growing love and desire for her. He initially calls Yuri his concubine and the incarnate form of Ishtar in order to protect her from Queen Nakia, but even he begins to believe his own tale after a while, and the legend of Yuri as Ishtar grows beyond his control. He is loyal to those he cares for, but constantly at odds with his stepmother, the third Tawananna, Queen Nakia. The third and current Tawananna (queen) of the Hittite Empire who serves as the antagonist of the series. Nakia is a high priestess controlling the element of water and a former princess of Babylonia sent to marry the king of the hitties Suppililiuma at the tender age of fifteen. She despises her family for using her as a peace offering to a king who already has other wives, thus making her last in succession to the throne. She stopped at nothing to gain her status as queen and to this day her mind is filled with revenge on everyone who made her life a hardship. She is also responsible for summoning Yuri into the past, intending to use her as a sacrifice for a death curse targeting the princes in line of succession before her own son. Her only wish is to make her son king of the Hittites, using any scheme necessary either by sending her loyal aide Urhi, or using her powers as a high priestess to mindcontrol people.
