About this title

Synopsis

After the Golden Kingdom is sunk underground by an insane magician, its king emerges, promising all of his treasure to any who defeat the magician, before crumbling to dust. Guilds are spurred on by this promise, traversing the labyrinthine dungeon in search of the magician. Laios Touden, the leader of one such guild, encounters a dragon that wipes out his party and devours his sister, Falin. Despite having lost the entirety of their supplies and belongings, Laios along with Marcille Donato, an elven healer, and Chilchuck Tims, a halfling thief, immediately reenter the dungeon, determined to save Falin. Time being of the essence, Laios suggests the taboo of eating the monsters of the dungeon as a means of gathering supplies. Upon the preparation of their first meal in the dungeon, they are stopped by an on-looking dwarf named Senshi. An enthusiast of monster cooking, he helps them prepare their monster ingredients for safe consumption. After learning of Laios' circumstances, Senshi expresses his desire to cook a dragon and joins their guild, thus beginning their food-filled foray into the dungeon together. [Written by MAL Rewrite]

Publication notes

Dungeon Meshi ranked first and sixth in the 2016 and 2017 Kono Manga ga Sugoi! for the Male Readers division, respectively. The manga was also nominated for the Manga Taisho Award for four consecutive years from 2016 to 2019, and won Best Comic at the 55th Seiun Awards in 2024. The series was published in English as Delicious in Dungeon by Yen Press from May 23, 2017, to July 23, 2024. It was also released in Italian by J-POP from February 1, 2017, to April 24, 2024; in Spanish by Milky Way Ediciones since February 27, 2017; and in French by Casterman since May 17, 2017.

In her normal dungeon attire, she wears a long blue dress with white pants, a blue cowl, a red choker, and sandals. She styles her hair differently every day. She is taller than Chilchuck and Senshi, but shorter than Falin and Laios. Marcille is intelligent, principled, and loyal to her friends. Despite this, she can also be very high-strung and has a difficult time dealing with things far outside her comfort zone (such as eating monsters). She has a lot of confidence in her ability to cast magic due to her background, and can feel lonely when she's unable to help the party with her specialty. She can also be kind of naive, believing that friendships alone can keep a party together. Falin is Marcille's closest friend. She thinks very highly of Falin, calling her incredible and an angel because of her spell-casting ability and kind nature. She enters the dungeon again despite the party's dire circumstances because of how much she cares about her. Age: 26 Birthday: November 26, 488 Birthplace: Northern Continent Height: 185cm 6'1" BMI: 26 Despite being looked down on by most characters, Laios is an incredibly strong fighter and the leader of the party. He uses the knowledge gained from cooking monsters to develop techniques to defeat them, but is also shown to have certain mythology and biological factors of them memorized, as shown with the dragons in the fight with the Lunatic Magician. He is a very calm and gentle person but gets very passionate when he talks about monsters, which irritates most of the people around him. He tends to speak very quickly when excited and makes animated hand gestures as well as facial expressions, a complete 180 from his usual demeanor. Though he's intelligent and passionate when it comes to monsters, as well as talented with combat, he falters in most situations outside of the dungeon. He's shown to struggle with other people, missing social cues and being overly blunt, which often leads to arguments with others. Despite having good intentions and seeing most people as his friends, those same people are uncomfortable around Laios and see him as someone who has the potential to become "evil" due to not understanding him. Though this struggle persists throughout the series, he stays extremely friendly and accepting towards others, even if they do not do the same for him, being quick to forge friendships with other groups and even orcs. Possibly due to his indifference towards most living things other than monsters, he doesn't really see a difference between himself and other races, including the orcs. Despite his deep love and admiration of monsters he has no illusions to the threat they pose. If anything his reverence of them has made him extra cautious to them. Born: October 2, 402 Height: 140cm 4'7" BMI: 36 Hair: Black Eyes: Black Senshi is a dwarf with tan skin, long black hair and round black eyes, and possesses a stocky build. He also has a long and ruffled beard, which was initially very dirty (to the point of being resistant to magic) but was later cleaned with assistance from Marcille. Compared to the rest of the group, he has a more cartoonish face, with rounded eyes and a very pronounced nose. His eyes also go slit-eyed when skeptical. A dwarf warrior who joins the party so he can fulfil his dream of cooking the red dragon Laios and his party have set out to kill. Senshi has an immense knowledge of the dungeon and the monsters within it, and is an expert chef. He typically fights with a large axe but always carries a pot and cooking utensils. He makes sure the party is well fed and has a balanced diet. He despises all forms of magic, believing its overuse can lead to one's downfall. He is initially quite stubborn about not using it at all, but eventually accepts essential spells to traverse the dungeon. He becomes unnerved at the presence of resurrection magic, as he says it is unnatural for people to come back from the dead. In other words, he treats magic with a great deal of gravity and caution. Izutsumi is not actively aggressive towards those around her but she is prone to becoming annoyed and hostile, especially when showered with physical affection (e.g. head pats). She is rather stand-offish but is not a distant person. She tends to be fairly self-centered, but is in the process of learning the value of working with others. She is capable of finding rapport with others and is even able to find her place among her peers. Izutsumi is primarily fueled by a determination to find someone to lift the curse on her body. She can be impatient to achieve this goal, which manifests in frustration due to what she perceives to be the slow progress of Laios' group through the dungeon. She has terrible table manners and is a picky eater. She has a tendency to offload unwanted duties onto others. All of Shuro's retainers have names related to plants. Asebi is known as the Japanese andromeda (Pieris japonica). Her favorite foods are fish, meats, and crab while her least favorite foods are vegetables and mushrooms. However she briefly did find mushrooms delicious when eaten in the sauce for her hamburg steak. Birthday: May 18, 485 Birthplace: The Eastern Continent Height: 110cm 3'7" BMI: 18 Chilchuck is shrewd and practical, rarely taking jobs from adventurers unless he is paid in advance. This behavior was learned from his experiences of being exploited as a Half-foot. He is more open to eating monsters than Marcille is, but like her, draws a hard line at demi-humans. He generally goes along with whatever the party does, but can speak frankly when they do something that can get them killed. His job as the party rogue puts him on edge, as failure to undo or avoid traps can lead his companions to immediate mortal danger. When other party members ignore his warnings, he quickly becomes agitated. He prefers to keep his private life separate from his work, so he doesn't tell his party a lot about himself. This is consistent with his belief that the most common reason for party splits is interpersonal issues. He hates mimics due to a history of repeated deaths caused by them.
