Sakura Adachi is a first-year high school student. She tends to skip class and that's why the rest of the students see her as a delinquent, but she just doesn't like to be around people. One day, Hougetsu Shimamura, a girl from her class, finds her on the second floor of the gym with the intention of skipping class too. Strangely, Sakura becomes really attached to Hougetsu and wants to be the closest person to her. Adachi had an extremely introverted personality. Before meeting Shimamura, she never had someone whom she can call a friend. Adachi was said to be cold toward other people and didn't attempt to make friends with other people in the past. She is also a generally very jealous person towards Shimamura when she is together with her friends and as a consequence usually ends up running away. She is left-handed. Shimamura Hougetsu is a high school student. She met Adachi while skipping class on the second floor of the gym in her school when Adachi accidentally walks in on her one day. The two instantly took a liking for each other and began to hang out together all the time. In both manga adaptations, it was Shimamura who walked in on Adachi in the gym when they first met instead of the reverse. Shimamura is a bit of an airhead who loves sleeping and can do so for as long as she wants. Contrary to Adachi, she has grown up on much better terms with her family and as such manages to be much more sociable even if she doesn’t see herself as a particularly kind person.
