Synopsis
During Apollo 17's 1972 space exploration mission to the moon, humanity found a strange hypergate that led to Mars. Upon entering the gate, the astronauts discovered an ancient technology known as "Aldnoah," which would soon cause mass migration to the planet, resulting in the creation of the Vers Empire to govern Mars. Descendants of this new civilization grew to resent Earthlings for their bountiful resources. These feelings led to a declaration of war, an event that ended with the hypergate's destruction in what would come to be known as the infamous "Heavens Fall." The effects were catastrophic, causing the obliteration of the Moon and irreparable damage to Earth through multiple meteor impacts, earthquakes, and tsunamis. Fifteen years later, a ceasefire has established a fragile peace, and Princess Asseylum Vers Allusia arrives on Earth in order to promote lasting friendship between the two races. However, not everyone is satisfied with the abrupt end of the first battle; certain forces have been waiting for such a moment in order to ignite the spark that will lead to a new war. When a group of terrorists attempts to assassinate the young princess, Martian soldiers retaliate by launching an assault, descending from space ready to enslave Earth's inhabitants once and for all. Inaho is a calm, intelligent boy. Even at times of great distress, he calmly thinks of a way out. He is intuitive and not afraid to go on many different tactics to analyze the opponents and figure out the suitable strategy. Inaho's parents died sometime prior to the war and he lived alone with his sister. Waking up, cooking breakfast for his sister, he leaves for his school in Shinawara. He, along with his friends, attended the parade where the princess was killed by a missile attack. Shortly after, the Orbital Knights declared war on the Terrans and invaded Earth. He wears the uniform of the Mars Orbital Knights. Slaine is shown to be very friendly with Princess Asseylum, being completely loyal to her. When presented with the possibility of her being alive, he boldly went after her alone. Slaine was born on Earth. His father was a scientist sent to study the ALDNOAH drives. He and his father were rescued by the royal family, having to work under them, he slowly developed a strong bond with the Princess. She went to Earth on a goodwill visit, but her motorcade was attacked and she was presumed to have died. This assassination was used by the orbiting Martians as a casus belli for their invasion. However, the princess was ill that day and the person who died was a body double. Asseylum now travels with Inaho's group under a false identity until they can get a message back to her grandfather in hopes of stopping the rekindled war. Asseylum is an idealist and pacifist. She believes in peaceful solutions and she sees the people of the Earth in a good light. Unlike many of the Martians shown so far, she seems to treat the people of Earth as equal humans. Asseylum appears to be regretful of the actions that led to the Second Earth-Mars War between the Martians and the people of Earth, yet she feels that she has the responsibility to help stop the war. Asseylum is kind, caring, and compassionate, however she is also naive, believing that if her grandfather found out that she were still alive, that the war would end. Asseylum later realizes her naivety, and that certain people of VERS were only using her as an excuse to start a war with Earth. Asseylum seems to also have a bold and decisive side, she is not particularly guarded around others being quickly open and friendly.
