About this title
Synopsis
Fifteen middle school students are happily attending a summer camp by the sea, until one of the children leads the group into a cave that will drastically alter the course of their lives forever. Inside are several computers, along with a man named Kokopelli who offers the students a chance to play a game: one where they use a gigantic robot to defeat enemies who attack the Earth. The children agree to sign a contract by touching a shield-like object, and Kokopelli transports them to the cockpit of the Zearth—the mecha they are to pilot. After an enemy mecha rises from the sea, Kokopelli shows them how to mentally control the Zearth, and defeats it. The children are excited by the prospect of defending the Earth, but not everything is as it seems. The Zearth is in fact powered by life energy, and at the end of every battle, the pilots die. After signing their lives away, the children must now use their time left on Earth to defend it. [Written by MAL Rewrite]

Main characters
Jun Ushiro69 fan favoritesExternal profileA boy with a short fuse, found almost always mistreating his little sister, Kana. Whenever he is upset by anything, the first thing he does is beat Kana. Despite this it is clear he does care for her from the start as he does not let Kana "play the game". (Source: Wikipedia)
Koemushi65 fan favoritesExternal profileA weird creature who calls itself "Dung Beetle" (Koemushi) and becomes the children's tutor after Kokopelli's disappearance. It is able to communicate verbally, and is usually very sarcastic. It responds to the children's call, which includes Kana even though she didn't sign the contract. It is able to teleport the children, as well as others from the outside world to the cockpit, and vice-versa. However, it cannot teleport directly between two places, and must go through the cockpit beforehand. Between battles, it can be seen conversing with an unknown entity. Even though he is clearly bound by some rule set, he acts very superior and expects others to be polite to him. He is unafraid to put others in their place when they do not give him the respect he believes he deserves. (Source: Wikipedia)
Daiichi Yamura32 fan favoritesExternal profileDaiichi was a hard-working and responsible boy despite his gruff "no-nonsense" exterior. He dedicatedly took care of his three younger siblings: Yoshi, Futaba, and Santa. He accepted this task because their mother had died much earlier, and their father abandoned them for unknown reasons three years ago. Their uncle on their father's side made up for his brothers disappearance by renting a home for the four siblings to live in, and paying for all expenses. Daiichi earned his keep by working as a mail and newspaper boy, and for his uncles landscaping business on his days off. He chose to live separately from his uncle with his siblings so that his father would have a place to return to if he ever decided to. When he and the other main characters first got involved with Zearth, he was the first to express any doubts and the first to try to leave the "game" before the group learned the truth of their involvement. His chair was not actually a chair, but a mere floating cushion, and he was lightly teased by a few of the other kids for this lack of imagination. During the fourth battle, Daiichi refused to move until the citizens had sufficient time to escape, a practice later adopted by all future pilots. (Source: Wikipedia)
Kunihiko Moji26 fan favoritesExternal profileA boy whose great intuition helped some of the previous pilots to defeat their enemies. Moji was kind and insightful, often ready to give advice and wisdom to his comrades when they needed it. The other children often came to him for advice. He had two childhood friends: a girl named Tsubasa, and a boy named Nagi, who had a heart disease. (Source: Wikipedia)
Chizuru Honda24 fan favoritesExternal profileChizu was relatively calm and a bit quiet, yet particularly disgusted by the one-track minds of her male classmates. Her chair was black and fancy, carefully designed, shapely, and looked very old. (Source: Wikipedia)
Yousuke Kirie14 fan favoritesExternal profileFat and weak-willed, he was often bullied. His depressed hikkikomori cousin made him wonder about the worth of his life, and that of others. (Source: Wikipedia)
Yoko Machi13 fan favoritesExternal profileLittle is known about Machi. Her parents are fishermen and she has described her older brother as being similar to Ushiro in behavior. She was the one who discovered Kokopelli's cave and she was reluctant to sign the contract but Waku's push forced her to become a part of it. When the children were introduced to their chairs, Maki initially thought Machi's chair was hers. (Source: Wikipedia)
Mako Nakarai12 fan favoritesExternal profileNakama was a girl who focused all or her energy on living honestly and being an active benefit to the community in hopes that others would see her as a responsible and dependable person. Despite this, the well-known fact that her mother is a prostitute and her humorless, over-responsible attitude left her no friends. Ever since elementary school any kind of hatred or dishonesty tortured her, so much that she couldn't even raise a clenched fist at all of the kids who bullied her, constantly having to keep to her duty and not protest in the slightest. Regardless, she looked up to her mother, and hoped to be able to stand proudly like she does. Nakama would even go so far as to give her mother the money she would make doing needlework. It was her mother's idea that she go to the nature school so that she would finally make some friends. (Source: Wikipedia)

Kana Ushiro7 fan favoritesExternal profileUshiro Jun's little sister who was often abused by him but never complained.
Isao Kako7 fan favoritesExternal profileKako was a spoiled and self-centered coward with a severe inferiority complex. He acted as an errand boy for a group of bullies to avoid being the subject of their abuse, and his parents would let him get away with just about anything, much to his older sister's chagrin. Kako’s only "friend" was Kirie who also went to his school. Kako would constantly boss Kirie around since it made him feel less like a loser especially since Kirie would take this abuse without complaint. Kako in fact made Kirie accompany him to the nature school for this very reason. It was here that Kako developed a strong crush on Chizu. When he first entered the game Kako was excited, hoping that his piloting Zearth would make him famous, but upon learning the price of piloting, he suffered a mental breakdown and hid in his room. Takashi Waku5 fan favoritesExternal profileWaku was an energetic and confident young boy who acted like a stereotypical shōnen main character. He was previously a talented soccer player and is considered popular. He wanted to become a professional player and his friends thought he had the talent for it. However, he found out that his salary-man father was a soccer player just like him in his youth and even played at the national level. The fact that someone just like him didn't make it shook Waku's resolve and he stopped playing soccer. If he had not quit the team he wouldn't have been at the summer class and become a pilot. He was chosen to become the first pilot of the children. After the battle with Bayonet, they celebrated on Zearth's shoulder. When Ushiro patted Waku on the back he fell off the side into the ocean. They thought that Ushiro accidentally pushed him but he actually died a moment before when his time as a pilot ended. His chair was a simple plastic folding chair. In the manga the number of casualties is unspecified, but in the anime there are 2,343 casualties. (Source: Wikipedia)

Masaru Kodaka2 fan favoritesExternal profileKodama was the boy chosen to pilot Zearth during the third battle with the robot, Cancer. He was a relatively quiet boy who liked to keep to himself. His father was a wary individual who ran a civilian contracting company. Kodama's two gifted older brothers hate their father and try to go towards a different path, however Kodama looked up to him and his status as a "chosen" man. He even wore Kokopelli's glasses to seem smarter like his father. Being raised by his father seems to have warped Kodama's sense of ethics and morality to the point where he enjoys to take shots at stray cats with a pellet gun. (Source: Wikipedia)
Takami Komoda2 fan favoritesExternal profileHer chair was a wooden, fancy, Victorian-style chair. (Source: Wikipedia)
Masamitsu Seki1 fan favoritesExternal profileMasamitsu Seki is one of the officers who befriended the children and assumed one of the empty places in Zearth's group. He joined the military thanks to his fascination with Idol Defense Force Hummingbird.
