Race: Human, Contractor Messier Code: BK-201 Ability: Electrical Manipulation Birthplace: China Former Affiliation: The Syndicate, EPR, CIA Team (Chronologically): Pai, Amber, Havoc -- Yin, Huang, Mao -- July, Suou Pavlichenko Throughout the series, Hei is required to bear many names and identities due to the life he leads. It is unknown whether Hei was originally a codename or his real name, however it is used frequently throughout the series to refer to him personally. "Hei" translates to "Black" in Chinese. In public view, he goes by the name Li Shengshun, masquerading as a foreign exchange student from China staying at the Umitsuki apartment block, Li is known for being polite and well mannered, while also carefully distant; he is also known for having a notoriously huge appetite. As a part of his covert missions for the underground organisation known as the Syndicate, Hei takes on various part-time jobs that allow him to track to his targets. Infamously known as "the Black Reaper" in the underground, or by his Messier Code "BK-201" by the authorities, Hei is both a highly skilled assassin and infiltrator, alongside being a Contractor with the ability to emit electricity throughout his entire body. In combat, Hei requires either direct contact or a conductive medium (i.e. metal, water, etc.) to affect his opponents; he is also able to control the voltage emitted, allowing him to stun or kill a target as needed. During missions, he typically dons a distinctive white mask and dark bullet-proof coat, alongside equipment attached to his belt which allows him to project wires to either facilitate a kill or to grapple with his surroundings for a greater range of movement (i.e. swinging, abseiling, etc).

  • Yin

A member of Hei's team and an emotionless spirit medium known as a "doll." Her power lies in tracking and observation by way of water. However, this power only takes effect when she is in direct contact with water. Huang mentions that her "program" is a minimal one, incapable of showing emotion or even allowing her to make decisions for herself, though, she later debunks this by making the decision to keep working with Hei and the others when given the choice of leaving. Judging from what we see of her past, Yin seems to have bad eyesight or is nearly blind, since she can't seem to know when the moon was full or if her teacher found his dropped pen in episode 13/14, but as if to contradict this there are times when Yin sees more than she seems to. Little, if anything, is known about her transformation into the medium known as a "doll." but it seems to revolve around her personal tragedy. It is implied that she has feelings for Hei, when Amber compared that they were both similar in that aspect and asked her to take care of him. Throughout the course of the series, Yin begins to display emotions and her own will, deciding to follow Hei and remain to be his partner, and even observes and notices a change in his behavior, despite not being ordered to do so. This has been made apparent when she called Hei from the void to come back to her and not leave her alone. In the process, her observation apparition evolved or upgraded, now having a human-like body shaped with her silhouette and is capable of physical touch.

Harvest is a Contractor who had been bonded with and controlled by the Black Dandelion. Harvest served in the war of Heaven's Gate in south America 5 years prior to the start of Darker than Black: Shikkoku no Hana. His ability of Matter Degeneration earned him respect, fear and the nickname "The Phantom" during his service. During an attempted assassination of Hei and Bai, Amber appears behind him and stops the assassination attempt. She then tells him that he is weaker than Hei, despite him not being a contractor (at the time) which leads to Harvest harboring a jealous vendetta with Hei. Harvest is cold, and cruel, uncaring towards humans and contractors alike. He has Darwinist views, and plots to use the Black Dandelion to turn all humans into contractors, and rid the world of irrational thinking. Ever since his time in South America, he has shown jealously towards Hei due the word Amber and said to him, and actively seeks him out for a personal vendetta, something which Kirihara notes is very unlike a contractor. Harvest has the ability to remove the intrinsic field of any object, being living or not by touch. This leaves the object disintegrating, leaving a substance looking similar to sand. Harvest is displayed the ability to avoid bullet wounds by degenerating the bullets before they cause damage. His ability has one known weakness. It can be rendered ineffective while harvest is exposed to an electrical current. Harvest's price is that he must swallow something round. He has stated that it must be the right roundness and size, being the size of a golf ball. Anything too small apparently won't satisfy the contract and anything too large could make Harvest choke and endanger him. He carries around a bag of what seems like large sweets to satisfy his price. Source: No voice actors have been added to this character.
