Synopsis

This manga is about the job of cleaning up scenes of death, and discusses the meaning of life and death. Through interactions between the deceased's family and friends with the death sweepers, we understand the meaning of death. No matter is it is a peaceful death at the ends of one's life, murder, suicide, death from illnesses, when death comes, who would be able to predict it, or prevent it? Reiji works for the Death Sweepers company. While he isn't rude, he tends to speak frankly and doesn't try to obscure the truth, but is still considerate of the relatives of the deceased. He approaches most jobs with a detached demeanor and chastises Hiroyuki for any inappropriate emotional outbursts. He is paired up with Hiroyuki and walks him through what needs to be done for every job. When asked by Hiroyuki, Reiji replies that he chose this job because he feels like he is helping the dead and learning from them at the same time. He has a cat named Chibi and, while he doesn't seem to be affected by seeing the bodies of deceased people, animal deaths are difficult for him to handle. He is a 20-year-old college student who likes to have fun and doesn't concern himself much with issues on a societal scale, nor does he understand why his brother would isolate himself in spite of his intellect. After Takashi commits suicide and the Death Sweepers company is called in for cleaning, Hiroyuki decides to work there part-time in order to process his grief. Although he feels overwhelmed and unprepared at first, Hiroyuki gradually becomes accustomed to death scenes and begins thinking about how society handles death.
