Synopsis

After seeing Izumi Sano at a high jump competition, Mizuki Ashiya became completely enamored by him—even moving from the United States to Japan and enrolling in the same institute as him. However, Sano's academy is an all-boys school! Due to her bright personality, Mizuki quickly befriends her class without drawing suspension to her gender. To her surprise, she ends up being not only Sano's classmate but also his roommate. Though she is now able to admire Sano in close proximity, she learns that Sano has quit high jumping and refuses to pick up the sport ever again for unknown reasons. Moreover, the academy's doctor, Hokuto Umeda, might be onto Mizuki's facade. Now, Mizuki has to find a way to reignite Sano's passion—all without revealing her secret. Hanazakari no Kimitachi e was published in English as Hana-Kimi: For You in Full Bloom by VIZ Media under the Shojo Beat imprint from September 7, 2004, to April 15, 2008. The publisher later re-released the manga as 3-in-1 omnibus volumes, wherein the final volume included Hanazakari no Kimitachi e: After School.

The guy that Mizuki Ashiya likes and an excellent high jumper. He finds out that Mizuki is a girl early in the series, but does not tell anyone else and actually becomes very protective of her secret. Before Mizuki came to Japan, Sano had been in an accident (he had tried to save his team captain from getting hit by a car, injuring his leg), causing him to quit high jumping for a while because he thought that he couldn't handle the pressure. But thanks to Mizuki's deal with her brother (Sano had to jump while her brother was in Japan, or Mizuki would have to come home), he is able to try again and was given a second chance to high jump. Sano falls in love with Mizuki, but cannot tell her because Mizuki thinks that if Sano found out her secret, she would have to leave. (Source: Wikipedia)

He likes Mizuki, but doesn't know that she is really a girl, and some of his classmates believe that he is gay due to that fact. Nakatsu also seems to have come to terms with that fact. As Umeda says,"...he's only attracted to her feminine side," meaning that Nakatsu is responding as any teenage male would to being around a female, although it would appear he is a bit more excitable than his classmates as none of them seem to be affected by Mizuki-- or they simply hide it better. At times, he is very jealous of Sano because of how close he is to Mizuki. He entered the school with a football (soccer) scholarship, and is very good at it. Originally from Osaka (the city, which is different from the school and spelled with different kanji), he has a thick Kansai accent and frequently uses the Kansai dialect. He knows that Ashiya Mizuki is a girl, gives her advice, and pretty much acts like an older brother or uncle to her. Umeda is gay. He is the uncle of Minami Nanba and brother to both Nanba Io (Minami's mother) and Umeda Rio. He is also in love with one of his old friends, another character from a different one of Hisaya Nakajo's stories. Karasuma (the reporter hounding Sano) is very terrified of him, but he just explains that he "shut her up" since she was "all freaked out about something and wouldn't shut up" while he was in a bad mood, so he choked her. He has a tendency to kick people in the head and call them stupid.

Mizuki Ashiya, who is Japanese, but moved to America when she was young, is the heroine of the story. She spontaneously moved from California to Japan and enrolled into an all boys school (Osaka Gakuen) because her idol, Sano Izumi, who’s a top high jumper and the same age as her, attends the school. To look like a boy, she keeps her hair short and ruffled and wears a tight demin vest to hide her boobs. In many ways, it’s good that she has a pretty flat chest, but she wants more cleavage. She’s a very fast runner (due to her mother’s athleticism), but is very clumsy at times (due to her father’s clumsiness). Mizuki loves all kinds of food, especially sweet things, which is a strong contrast to Izumi's dislike of them. Also, she can be quite stingy when it comes to sharing her food. She’s also a lover of animals, as we can see when she’s with Yujirou, Sano’s dog.
