Synopsis
The eponymous protagonist is a naive young ninja from the Iga province called Kagemaro (absolute shadow), nicknamed Kabamaru (hippo's mouth) for his insatiable appetite. After the death of his strict grandfather and ninja sensei, Kabamaru moves to Tokyo with one of his grandfather’s acquaintances. The plot deals mainly with Kabamaru adjusting to an urban lifestyle after spending a childhood in the mountains and how he finds himself caught up in the rivalry between two private schools. In the 1st manga edition (October 1982 – September 1983) it ended when Kabamaru went back again with his grandfather and Hayate to Iga village while in the 2nd manga edition (1998) the story about Kabamaru's son (Ko)-Kabamaru Igano after marrying his love interest Mai Ookubo.

She lost her parents when she was a child and was raised by her grandmother, Ran Ookubo who is the president of Kinyoku High School which Mai attends. Kabamaru fell in love with her at first sight. However because Kabamaru is from a poor village and has an unbelievable appetite, she finds him completely repulsive. Mai is in love with the handsome and charismatic Shizune Mejiro unaware that he is only attentive to her because she is Ran's granddaughter and he wants to use her to further his own ambitions. She eventually grows feelings for Kabamaru, especially after she came to know him better and understand that he isn't as bad deep down inside his heart as she initially thought.
