Synopsis

The rumored "Grim Reaper" possessing the ability to curse others by touch alone, Akane Nishimura, is just a regular elementary school girl with a gloomy appearance. Due to constant bullying from her classmates, Akane is isolated and friendless at school. However, when clueless transfer student Taiyou Takada is impressed with Akane's "powers," he asks to be her friend. Akane Nishimura is a young girl who is almost relentlessly bullied by almost everyone in her class. While she seems relatively unaffected by it all, she has walled herself off from everyone as well. This is what makes her try to turn Takada away from her when he professes an interest in her because of her nickname. Through Takada's relentless attempts at friendship, she starts opening up to him and some of the other kids in her class that weren't a part of her bullies. At some point, she adopts a black kitten which she names Kuro. One of the reasons why she might have gotten the reaper nickname is because her mother passed away not long after her birth, which is something her classmates know about.

Moving from the countryside, Takada is a new arrival in class. Once he hears that Nishimura is referred to as a "Grim Reaper", he immediately takes an interest in her and moves in to become her friend. He thinks everything about her is awesome, and seems completely oblivious to everyone else's bullying attempts. His almost relentless optimism might be why the show is named as it is, but he isn't entirely clueless. He's able to put two and two together about how he potentially might have hurt Nishimura with his comments. (Which usually turns out to be a misunderstanding on his end.)
