Synopsis

A collection of short stories. Each story ranges from unrequited love to curious relationships to love fulfilled. Kaede is a university student whose main concern is getting something to eat. She is a sophomore History major. She is collected, mature, unperturbed by many things and has a deadpan nature, though she also is rather scrappy and does not care about things like other people's social lives, gossip or her appearance. She enjoys bumming around, and likes to sleep on the grass on campus grounds. She meets Miyaji Erika while doing this. She finds the other woman to be cute, but slaps Erika when she spontaneously kisses Kaede on the lips. However, Kaede does not seem upset about it, and just thinks that someone who does things like that without people's permission deserves a good smacking around. By spending more and more time with Erika, who actively begins pursuing her, Kaeda becomes rather taken with the other woman. She is vaguely aware that she might be falling for Erika, but she handles it in a rather offhanded way, much in tone to the rest of her personality. Kaede loosely defends Erika against slander, though she does not really seem to care much about her new friend's social life or what she did in her past. Her only concern is the Erika that she spends time with and their own interaction. Eventually though, Kaede comes to love Erika. Kaede also realises just how much Erika loves her when she agrees to go on a group date with Kaede even though she was sick. Accepting that her feelings for Erika is love, Kaede kisses her and the two end up dating. Kaede eventually expresses physical desire for her new girlfriend, asking her how exactly should they go about having sex, much to Erika's surprising embarrassment. Akane is a beautiful, princess-like girl with a very self-assured though cold attitude. She does not see the need in getting along with the rest of her classmates and so just says whatever is on her mind. She says it herself, that she is only considerate to people she likes. She begins speaking to and spending time with the boyish-looking Maria as they are slated to play the prince and princess in a class play. Akane openly elects herself for the role of the princess. The class begrudgingly lets her since she has the perfect aura and looks to be a delicate princess, however they do not like her. She knows that people are not fond of her, but she does not seem to care and only pays attention to Maria. Akane constantly tells Maria that she finds her to be cute, despite Maria's denial. She harbours feelings for Maria and seems surprised that the taller girl does not notice that the reason for her attention is due to her affections. She is there to comfort Maria when the other girl feels depressed about her looks. Ironically, it appears that Akane is more of a prince, as Maria sees her, as she is confident, strong and there to save the one she likes from being sad or doing things she does not want to do. Izumi is a rather eccentric though simple girl. She does not find her lifestyle to be strange, but to the average person, she is rather odd. She calls her mother by her first name, she eats vending machine lunches most of the time, and does not really have any cares or problems. She loves spending her lunch times with her best friend Shizuka, who sometimes gives her some home-made food so Izumi's diet is not so unhealthy. She cares for her best friend a lot, and notices one day that Shizuka is not herself (unbeknownst to her, Shizuka had her heart broken by unrequited love for an upperclassman in her club). Izumi fries her brain over ways to cheer her friend up, and decides to make her a lunch filled with love so she can be happy again; the lunch turns out to be a mostly inedible tasteless disaster made with frozen food, but Izuki is glad to see that Shizuka is willing to eat it. She suddenly gets rather flustered when Shizuka smiles once again for her, and wonders why her heart suddenly begins to beat a little faster around her friend now... Despite her looks (pierced up ears, messy hair, tall stature and grouchy facial features), Matsuri is a rather nice person who befriends Shizuka despite scaring her on their first meeting with her gruffness. She is a member of the crafts club, much to people's surprise. She is rather careless about her emotions and has a severe crush on her upperclassman, Aya. She often drags Shizuka along with her to meet Aya and so has an excuse to spend time with the senior. She is at a loss because she wants to confess to Aya since she will be graduating soon. Matsuri eventually tells Aya her feelings, only for Aya to tell her that she's a cute underclassman and that she does not see her as anything more. She ends up crying and Shizuka comes to her side to comfort her. She has no idea that Shizuka is in love with her until the younger girl confesses to her. Matsuri wonders why would someone like Shizuka like someone like her, and warns her that she does not return her feelings. Maria is a very boyish-looking high school student. Due to her looks, she is often typecasted by her classmates, and is immediately slated to play the prince in the class production of the Grimm fairy tale "Maid Maleen" for the cultural festival. Maria is unable to decline due to her penchant to just go along with things to please people, however she does not want to be the main character and definitely does not like the fact that because of her facial features and tallness, she is not considered to be a girl. She is inwardly tormented by memories of growing up where she was picked on for looking less like a girl. She even overhears some schoolmates saying that she looks like a "fag" because of her pretty boy looks, and ends up crying in the library. Maria is very shy and sensitive, though the only person who comes to see that is her classmate and the girl who plays the princess in the play: Akane. Through interacting with Akane, Maria comes to fall for her though she does not realise that she is slowly growing a crush on the other girl. She is especially taken by the fact that Akane is the only person who thinks that she is cute. A few days before the performance, Maria helps Akane repair her dress for the play alone in a classroom after school. There Maria tells Akane the whole truth about her insecurity and self-pity because she has no confidence in herself because of her looks. Akane tells her again that she is cute and kisses her, much to Maria's shock. Maria starts seeing Akane as being more like a dashing prince than a pretty princess. Erika is a rather cute girl who catches the fancy of most boys in her university. However, she turns them all down because she says, very bluntly, that she only likes other girls. She finds Kaede after catching the other woman accidentally overhearing a confession she was rejecting. After lightly flirting with her, Erika kisses Kaede only to get slapped in the face. However, it seems this action causes her to become quite smitten with Kaede rather than disheartened. She begins a friendship with the other girl though is very dogged in pursuing her. Erika enjoys taking photos. She always carries a camera around with her and likes taking Kaede's picture a lot, though tells the other girl that she is not photogenic at all. She keeps her pictures as a visual diary of sorts and only takes her camera with her to places she likes and only snaps people she likes. She is the subject of a lot of gossip, as people claim that she is a boyfriend stealer. She does not care about the rumours, nor does she deny them, though it seems that the only reason she broke up other people's relationships was to get the girl rather than get the guy. Somewhere inside, Erika thinks that Kaede will never love her the way she does, and so does whatever Kaede wants just to make her happy and spend time with her. She is shocked to later learn that her feelings are reciprocated. Despite being gutsy enough to just kiss Kaede on their first meeting, she seems rather shy when the two start dating and even gets incredibly red when Kaede mentions sex. Shizuka is the shy, quiet type girl. She is small, has light, fluffy hair and wears glasses. She joins the crafts club in high school and there meets Matsuri, an upperclassman who she at first thinks is a little scary but eventually warms up to. Slowly, Shizuka finds herself falling for Matsuri but she recognises that her love is one-sided and that Matsuri herself has a thing for another senior in their club: Aya. Shizuka is very supportive, in an almost self-destructive way, silently having her heart broken but being there for Matsuri when she needs the younger girl. She even goes out of her way to wait around with Matsuri after school just to catch a glimpse of Aya. She also nurses Matsuri's broken heart after hearing that she confessed to Aya but got turned down. She loses confidence in herself especially because she thinks Aya is a wonderful person and a nice, caring, pretty upperclassman who is better suited to Matsuri. She is best friends with Izumi, a girl from a her class whose concerns fall on what tasty lunch she can get to share with Shizuka, who cooks her own food. After confessing to Matsuri boldly and almost frustratedly, the two agree to remain friends despite Matsuri telling Shizuka that she does not feel the same way and still holds feelings for Aya. In a bout of depression, she sees that her eccentric friend Izumi is trying to cheer her up, going so far as to make a (mostly inedible) lunch for her despite Izumi's less than stellar cooking skills. Shizuka is rather warmed by her best friend's actions and thinks the food tastes good because it was made with her feelings in mind. She is a tall, sporty girl who is the manager of her school's football (soccer) team. She is known among her friends for being a big football fan as well. Yuuka harbours deep feelings for her long time friend Miwa. She tells Miwa that she loves her, though Miwa thinks that she is joking. She harbours her unrequited feelings quietly and is heartbroken when she figures out that her best friend is in love with a guy from the school's football team. She hates herself for loving Miwa so much that she is the link between her and Misumi (the one Miwa likes). Miwa gives her a love letter to pass on to Misumi and Yuuka can only stare at it and get angry before she decides what she wants to do with it. Yuuka tried everything she could to subtly get Miwa to love her back, even cutting off her hair in the style that Misumi wears his own hair, but it seems that her love will forever be one-sided and secret. She wrote her own love letter to Miwa back when they were in junior high, but Yuuka never gave to the one she loved. Miwa is a shy girl who cannot hide her feelings very well. She brushes off whenever her best friend Yuuka says "I love you" to her since she thinks Yuuka is teasing her. She and Yuuka have been friends for a long time, and she even is close to Yuuka's mother, running errands for her such as carrying lunch for Yuuka on days the school football team has practice.
