About this title

Synopsis

Humanity, once a technologically advanced and thriving civilization, has been pushed to the brink of extinction following a cataclysmic war known as the Seven Days of Fire. The remnants of the human race now live in scattered kingdoms to avoid the unrelenting spread of the Sea of Corruption, a colossal forest infested with dangerous mutant insects and fungi that produce poisonous spores. Nausicaä, the sole heir to the throne of the agricultural kingdom Valley of the Wind, is thrust into war after an ally kingdom, the imperialist Torumekia, invades the Dorok Empire. Forced to fight alongside the Torumekian military and their cunning princess Kushana, Nausicaä witnesses firsthand the horrors of war and its effect on both humanity and the environment. With her uncanny charisma and gentle nature, Nausicaä may be the only hope for humanity as the ongoing war and the Sea of Corruption hasten the extinction of mankind. Set against the backdrop of a devastated world, Kaze no Tani no Nausicaä depicts the aftermath of human folly and the immortal power of nature. [Written by MAL Rewrite]

The Princess of the Valley of Wind. She is clever, resourceful, and a skilled swordswoman. She is a windrider, who can read and utilize the wind well, and flies a "Mehve," a glider with an engine. She has an empathetic ability and can even communicate with insects from the Sea of Corruption. As a next chieftain of the Valley, she joins Kushana's army, but the gruesome reality of the war devastates her. She desperately tries to stop mass killing and suffering, and her quest for the truth leads her to the most unimaginable places, and to the biggest secret of the world. (Source: nausicaa.net)

Princess of Torumekia, youngest daughter of the Vai Emperor. In the anime, she lost one of her arms as a child during an Ohmu attack, and is driven by a desire for revenge against the giant insects. She intends to wipe the Sea of Corruption off the face of the earth, by any means necessary. While she is not presented as completely evil, she is definitely an antagonist. In the manga, she has a much more complicated role, more of an antihero/ally than an antagonist. She is mostly driven by a desire for revenge against her father and three older half-brothers, whom she hates and blames for the fate of her mother. She commands the Torumekian Third Army, whom she trained personally; she is devoted to her men, and they are unswervingly loyal to her. Despite her ferocity in battle, she has a nobility of character that earns her the respect of both Nausicaä and Master Yupa. While she admires Nausicaä's pacifist ideals, she sees herself as inescapably destined to walk the path of bloodshed.

"The Emperor, Older Brother" of Dorok. He doesn't have a mystic power, and had been virtually locked up in the palace for 100 years. Near the end of the story; however, he leaves the capital, Shuwa, and starts taking charge of things. 100 years of boredom seems to have affected his psyche rather badly, and now he wants to have some "excitement," which is a bad news for Nausicaä and everyone else.
