About this title

Synopsis

Lacking in self-esteem and suffering from social anxiety, eighth-grader Hikage Sumino has remained unnoticed throughout her life. Upon entering middle school, she made a personal resolution to make some friends, but even at the end of her first year, she remains fruitless. Her only comforts are a lonely flower she found and regularly cares for, and "1 Centimeter of Happiness," her sunflower-themed internet blog where she regularly posts her thoughts and experiences. Though she usually gets only two visitors on her blog, Hikage finds satisfaction in their comments and appreciates their support. One day, she is surprised to find out that two of the most popular boys of her school, Hinata Mutou and Teru Mikami, are aware of her presence and remember her name. Dazed by this sudden revelation, she posts about this encounter on her blog and gets an inspiring comment from one of her regular visitors. Koko ni Iru yo! was first published in English as I Am Here by Del Rey Manga, who released one 2-in-1 omnibus on November 23, 2010 before going defunct. Kodansha Comics USA took over the license and published the second and final omnibus on July 26, 2011, and republished the first omnibus on December 18, 2012.

Sumino is a girl who has always been unnoticeable and has no presence because she is plain and shy. She decides she wants to change and make a least 3 friends in high school. But on the way to school she sees a cat crossing the street that is about to be hit by a car. She stands in front of the cat and tries to be noticeable before being hit. She still gets hit because the driver 'only saw that cat'. She has to go to the hospital for an extended time and misses the first days of high school. When she recovers and starts school again, all the cliques and social groups have already been formed, leaving Sumino in the same position she had in middle school. She is ignored as she always was and even the teacher doesn't recognize her. But then she meets Hinata, a popular boy who is 'like the sun', who really likes her and has always acknowledged her presence. She decides to try to become someone who can stand by the sun. Throughout the book she confides in her sunflower decorated blog. There she has two followers, Black Rabbit and MegaPIG, who write back supportive messages, where she is known as Himawari.
