The Secret Room of the Lake (湖の秘密室, Mizuumi no Himitsu-shitsu) is a 1940s manga by Kennosuke Niizeki, originally published in Japan by Ogiwara Seibunkan. While no Japanese publisher has reissued it since its original run, the work entered the public domain in 2024 (70 years after Niizeki’s death in 1953) and was first internationally published by Novo Verso Editora in Brazil in 2025. It was released digitally on October 6, 2025, and in print on December 31, 2025, becoming the oldest manga ever published in Brazil, predating even Osamu Tezuka’s New Treasure Island (1947). The Brazilian edition was remastered from original materials obtained from Japan’s National Diet Library, features official ISBN registration, and was translated by Larissa Shibuya Comba. Though not adapted into anime or other media, its historical significance lies in being one of the earliest science fiction manga for children, showcasing themes of invention and pursuit. Its recent release has sparked renewed interest in pre-Tezuka manga, with Novo Verso planning further publications of Niizeki’s works like Rocketloon Gō no Uchū Tanken and Z Kōsen
