About this title
Synopsis
In the town of Tokeizaka stands the old, worn-down boarding house known as Maison Ikkoku. For the last few years, the building has been home to a rambunctious group of tenants, including 20-year-old college applicant Yusaku Godai, its most recent resident. Recently, however, Yusaku has grown impatient with the noisy shenanigans interrupting his studies and has decided to move out. However, as he is preparing to leave, a beautiful woman named Kyoko Otonashi introduces herself as the new property manager. Falling in love with her at first sight, Yusaku changes his mind and decides to stay to court Kyoko instead. Though he initially believes he is making progress with Kyoko, Yusaku soon discovers that she is a widow still mourning the loss of her late husband. Despite her growing feelings for Yusaku, Kyoko states that she has no intentions to remarry or even date, as she still loves her late husband. Empathizing with her, Yusaku seeks to free Kyoko from her sadness with the help of the other inhabitants of Maison Ikkoku—all in the hope that she will one day see him as more than just another tenant of the building. Main characters
Kyouko Otonashi643 fan favoritesExternal profileAge: 22 Kyouko is the manager of the apartment. She lives in the manager's room of Ikkoku-kan. She has recently recovered from her husband's death, and is trying to figure out her life, between keeping the memory of Souichiro-san alive and her own feelings for other people. Her dog is named Souichiro-san after her late husband. She is still on the Otonashi family register, but her parents want her to get off and come home or remarry; however, she decides that she would rather work for Grandfather Otonashi, who owns Ikkoku-kan.
Yuusaku Godai339 fan favoritesExternal profileAge: 20 The resident of room #5. He is a timid, clumsy and soft indecisive man who day-dreams a lot. He's been the constant target of harassment and practical jokes by other tenants. Also, his room, by tradition, is the party site since his is the only room spacious enough to contain more than five people, and clean enough to hold such lunacy essentially every night.
Yotsuya127 fan favoritesExternal profileThe mysterious resident of room #4. The other tenants gave up on finding out anything about this strange man whose personal information is completely unknown, even job or age. Yet he seems to have something to call his job, and somewhere to call home, since he was away during the new year's holiday. His hobby is peeping and eavesdropping. His room's closet is connected to Godai's room by a huge crack that Yotsuya always opened whenever somebody tried to seal it. The only time anybody saw Yotsuya at work was when he tutored Yagami, although he didn't teach her anything. All he has done in the course of four years recorded in TV or manga has been to create unspeakable messes. It has been speculated among fans that Yotsuya is one and the same as the character Sekoi in another Rumiko Takahashi Manga titled Dust-spurt. In it, Sekoi is a secret agent working for the HCIA="Hinomaru Central Intelligence Agency."
Akemi Roppongi35 fan favoritesExternal profileThe waitress of the snack bar "Cha-Cha-Maru," the resident of room #6. She is a red-haired bombshell who wears a negligee whenever she's in Ikkoku-kan. Though she may act sloppy, she is quite a sensitive lady who can understand not only Kyoko's feelings but Godai's as well.
Hanae Ichinose11 fan favoritesExternal profileA heavy-drinking middle-aged lady in room #1 of Ikkoku-kan. She is from Hokkaido. Aside from the fact that she's a party animal, she is typical of her age: in one word, nosy. When she still didn't know that Kyoko was a widow, she was trying very hard to arrange an "omiai" (a formal introduction to another person, in the hopes they would develop a relationship and marry each other) for Kyoko. Once she realized that Kyoko was serious about Godai, she tried to be their counselor.
Kentarou Ichinose1 fan favoritesExternal profileKentaro begins the story as grade-school-aged brat, generally seen trying to get between his mother and her bottle. Initially, he is antagonistic toward Yusaku, but events soon see him to look upon Yusaku as an "alright guy." He is also very fond of Kyoko, especially because he sees her as the one of sane person in the building. He develops a crush on Kyoko's niece Ikuko, reminding Yusaku of himself, although Kentaro resents the comparison. (Source: Wikipedia)
