Negi Springfield is the teacher of Mahora Girls' Jr High School class 3-A (formerly 2-A). Negi Springfield is the son of master mage Nagi Springfield, famously known as the legendary "Thousand Master" and princess Akira of the Ostian Empire in the magic world. At present, Negi has formed 11 temporarily pactio with his students (Asuna, Nodoka, Setuna, Konoka, Yue, Haruna, Chisame, Kazumi, Kaede, Kuu Fei, and Chachamaru) and 1 temporarily pactio with Theo, which gives him the artifact that allow him to use any of his partner's artifact. Negi specialize in Wind spells and Lightning spells (his father's specialty) though he is initially lacking in battle experience. He later trains under Ku Fei in Martial Arts to make up for his weakness in close combat, advancing very quickly (even learning how to do instant movement, otherwise known as shundou), and applies a strong magical barrier around himself to avoid damaging his frail body. He eventually becomes a master of using delayed spells as a battle tactic. Due to the training he had with Evangeline and Jack Rakan, his magic and combat capability increases exponentially. Negi also learns and improves upon Evangeline's "Magia Erebea," which absorb offensive spells into his own body. He also came up with a new spell: "Spell Synthesis: Lightning God Lance Titan Slayer" which is a new high class lightning spell. Negi even manage to use Magia Erebea's ultimate ability by using a magic circle that can stop and absorb the enemy's attack whether it is magical or spiritual attack and use it against them, which even Evangeline herself could not master it. In the latest chapter, it is shown that Magia Erebea marks have begin to spread all over Negi's body and that Negi has formed a temporarily pactio with Shiori, one of Fate's subordinates. His aim is to become a Magister Magi (master mage) like his father and find his father who is currently missing.

She has since confessed her feelings to him, but not much progress in their relationship has been made; they still remain friends. Nodoka is the second person to establish a probationary contract with Negi and gain a pactio card (it occurred during the field trip to Kyoto). Her artifact is a book that can show one's thoughts in picture diary format.

Setsuna is a Shinmeiryu swordswoman from Kyoto who was taken in by Eishun Konoe, Konoka's father and the leader of the Kyoto Mage Association. She is childhood friends with Konoka and her protector. Setsuna spends the beginning of the series being relatively cold to Konoka, wishing to protect her from the shadows due to not forgiving herself for being unable to save Konoka when she almost drowned when they were kids. She does eventually open up to Konoka after the Kyoto arc and begins calling her "Oujo-sama" and "Kono-chan." Setsuna's pactio, Sica Shishikushiro is a wakizashi which she can summon and multiply at will to strike targets like missiles. Due to her training she's also skilled in anti-demon arts and is the one who taught Negi how to create shikigami from paper. Setsuna is a hanyou like Koutaro, in particular a crow. She was expelled from her people because white wings are considered a bad omen, and it was implied by Evangeline that she is an albino using hair dye and contact lenses to appear human. A running gag within the series is that Setsuna and Konoka appear to have romantic feelings for one another, yet Setsuna will deny it whenever she and Konoka are stumbled upon in romantic situations or asked about her preference.

When she finds out that Negi is a mage she gets excited about learning magic herself. At first she shows no romantic interest in Negi, but as time goes by she finds herself developing a crush on him. However she doesn't want to hurt Nodoka, so she tries to keep it bottled up as much as she can. She's supportive of Nodoka and wishes her the best of luck when it comes to her and Negi's relationship. Yue became the 5th person in Negi's class to make a pactio with him, following Asuna, Nodoka, Setsuna, and Konoka.

Seat Number: 10 Completed: March 1, 2001 Activated: January 4, 2002 Hair: Light green Eyes: green Spring Powered model (initially external power source) Likes: Having people wind her up, serving Tea Dislikes: Nothing, really... Belongs to the: Tea Ceremony Club, Go Club Chachamaru Karakuri is student number ten in the class. She is a two-year-old robot created by Satomi Hakase to serve Evangeline and protect her during time where the spell binding her weakens her. She is initially without any real emotions, but after spending time around Negi, she begins to have feelings for him, and show emotions, such as embarrassment when the crush is brought up, her internal gears increasing in speed during moments where a human's heart would beat faster, and even leaking laser fluid from her eyes when she's upset. These feelings go against her original programming, which excites Hakase. She spends most of her free time helping people and rescuing stray animals. She strongly fears the idea that she is nothing more than a soulless doll and that she does not have a soul; however, during the Governor's ball in the Magic world she forms a pactio with Negi (in Nagi form) which appears to have a cat theme, proving that she does indeed have a soul; as Pactio contracts can only be formed between those with true souls. Chachamaru's body is powered by an internal spring combined with magic, and it has to be wound with a key by someone with magical energy to power her. The actual winding process is apparently pleasurable and/or arousing, although too much magic can intensify the feeling to uncomfortable levels. She is skilled in hand to hand combat, and she is equipped with rocket fists, laser emitters, magic-powered thrusters that can allow her to fly for fifteen minutes, and a tool to undo binding circles. Her body has been upgraded several times, and she is later given a completely new body that looks completely human, unlike her original body's easily detectable parts; she even has a chibi body designed to disguise herself. The upgrade also allows her to transform her arms into swords and guns.

  • Kotarou Inugami

Kotaro Inugami is first seen as one of the three mercenary children helping Chigusa in Kyoto. He is a dog hanyō, which is evidenced by his ears and tail. Despite being hotheaded, Kotaro is a chivalrous person and would never hit a woman unless she is a powerful fighter, having trained under the Garyū Inugami-ryū which is basically a self-taught school. He also has a strong dislike of Western-style magic, with Negi being one of the few exceptions. Kotaro is an expert in ninjutsu and charms, and has the power to summon inugami (dog spirits), but prefers to fight hand to hand rather than using magic from a distance. Kotaro is also capable of self propelled flight with an adaption of his inugami abilities. Kotaro also has the ability to transform into a small black and white dog using a paper charm, or to a stronger beast form. He claim that most of his fighting technique (including the use of ki power) was made up by himself. His capability to correctly analyze Negi's technique supports his ability to achieve such a task. After the Kyoto Arc, he was put under the custody of the Kansai Magic Association, where his abilities to transform and summon dog spirits were sealed. He later escaped to find Negi (whom he now considers as a rival, being the only person he's met of his own age who can fight with him on even terms) to have another rematch. When he arrived at Mahora, he ran into Graf Hermann and The Slime Sisters, and learned their plan to attack Negi. He fought them, stole the bottle that Graf Hermann had been released from, and escaped. However, in an attempt to warn Negi, he was injured and hit with a confusion spell, causing temporarily amnesia. Chizuru and Natsumi, initially thinking him to be just a stray dog, nursed him back to health. Kotaro has a very lonely past, because being a hanyō has made him, from birth, an outcast of both human and dog-yōkai tribes. (possibly driven from InuYasha as Ken Akamatsu admits to be a fan of that series.) This makes him value both his friendship with Negi, and living with Chizuru and Natsumi, as they become the only true friends or family he's ever had. Chizuru's maternal attitude to Kotaro (such as her hugging him in public) frequently embarrasses him. He also regularly chastises Negi for being "involved" with so many girls, only to have his relationship with Chizuru thrown in his face (it's a little unclear whether this is because he has a crush on her or whether it's just simple embarrassment). While Kotaro likes to think of himself as a "lone wolf," Negi teased him by saying "You're more like a dog." His views also seem to draw him into arguments with Yue, which he usually loses. He also holds Kaede in high regard, due to her strength. Like Negi, Kotaro has a somewhat limited view about the world in general, and he is more or less ignorant when it comes to the emotions of girls. His stance on becoming the strongest only in combat leaves him unprepared for things that do not involve fighting.

She trains in the mountains and is able to use a wide range of ninja abilities, such as creating clones. She has an easy-going attitude, and spends most of her time with her eyes nearly closed, a trait shared with Mitsune Konno, a character from Akamatsu's previous work, Love Hina. She's very friendly and outgoing, but not very smart: she's one of the Baka Rangers (a name given to the five worst students in Negi's class), Baka Pink. A minor character in the beginning of the series, Makie's role is slightly expanded on later on in the manga, where she finds herself having a small crush on Negi later in the series (mainly more so in her finding him cute than an actual crush). Despite her constant being around her teacher, though, she is unaware that he's a mage. In the Negima!? anime series her character is quite different. Although still cheerful and kind, she's now a form of comic relief; she's often made fun of and mocked by her roommate Ayaka. Despite this, though, the two get along somewhat well, sharing a dorm together even.

She likes to get the inside scoop on everything that goes on, and is part of the Mahora Paparazzi. Her dedication to digging out the "truth" extends to knowingly working with her friends enemies so long as she gets a "scoop." She finds out about the secret of magic while spying on Negi, though she is persuaded to keep it a secret in exchange for a probationary contract. She is close friends with Sayo, the ghost girl, and often has her spy on people in order to obtain a scoop. She later obtains a doll for Sayo to possess, so that she can leave the school grounds. Her pactio, "Oculus Corvinus," creates up to six small golem cameras that she is able to manipulate and send to any part of the world.

Student Number 31 Birthdate: March 17, 1989 The silent acrobat, and one of the most mysterious girls of the class. Nothing much is known about her, as she rarely associates with anybody, and even when she does, she rarely talks (she has spoken only eight times in the serialized manga thus far). What is known is that she is a member of the Nightmare Circus, the school's Acrobatic Club, and is seen directing a group of "monsters" or "spirits" (similar to No-Face from Spirited Away, the Angels from Neon Genesis Evangelion or possibly Hollows from Bleach) when she offered to cover for her classmates during the school festival, and gave Chao a tiny living dragon as a farewell gift. She also has been shown to see Sayo without the assistance of Negi or having a close relationship with her like Kazumi. According to Negi's Class Register, Zazie is also a member of the school's Magic Club, though whether this is real magic or stage conjuring is unknown. In the anime, she is shown to have proficiency in all kinds of circus tricks such as juggling, sleight of hand, and costume changing. She has dark skin, and has two particular face marks: a large teardrop under her left eye (strongly resembling the carnival character "pierro"), and a vertical line resembling a scar crossing the right side of her face. A splash picture of the cast shows her with claws growing from her fingers. She is sometimes seen with her pet bird, but more recently with her "friends" (the black spirit-monsters). So far, she is the least known of all the students in Negi's class and very little has been revealed about her. Zazie is one of the few students in Class 3-A who did not participate in Negi's sojourn to Wales and the Magical World. When Zazie's name is seen it is written in the Latin alphabet, rather than in Japanese. Similarly, Evangeline's name is also written with the Roman alphabet. This seems to indicate that, like Evangeline, Zazie isn't from Japan and is instead from a country which uses the Roman alphabet. This is backed up by the fact that Chisame referred to her as a transfer student in volume 2. (Source: Wikipedia)

She's also an aspiring manga artist, specializing in "adult" stories. Despite not being romantically attracted to anyone, Haruna seems to have the odd ability to detect when someone around her is in love by using her bangs like antennae. She also claims that love itself has a scent akin to rotting candy almonds, which she calls the "love reek." Her breast size in class appears to be ranked 5th.
