Publication notes

Pocket Monsters Special was published in English as Pokémon Adventures by VIZ Media. The series was originally released in monthly single issues from September 1999 to 2003 with bound volumes being published since July 6, 2000, the series has been republished in a "second edition" since June 2, 2009, featuring a new translation with right-to-left artwork (unlike the first one) and content omitted from the previous translation. However, there are some edits in the new-to-American audience volumes. VIZ released a series of mini-volumes titled Pokémon Black and White as a "Pokémon Adventures Special Edition" with the volume versions coming later as Pokémon Adventures: Black & White, released since July 2, 2013. Age: 10 (GSC), 11 (RSE), 16 (HGSS) Birthday: July 21 Birthplace: New Bark Town Blood type: B Gold is the fifth main character of the manga series Pocket Monsters Special. His starter Pokémon is a Cyndaquil which he "borrowed" from Professor Elm; what his actual first Pokémon was is not clear, since he grew up in a house full of Pokémon. His neighbors in New Bark Town refer to his family as the "Poké House." He likes playing billiards, but sometimes he may use his Pokémon to cheat. His favorite idol/DJ is DJ Mary from the Goldenrod Radio Station. He usually wears a pair of goggles and travels on a skateboard. Instead of throwing/kicking his Poké Balls, he uses a billiard cue to shoot them out. Gold's hobbies include gambling, skateboarding, and trying foods from different cities. Professor Oak noted that while Red had some odd habits, Gold is much more immature and mischievous. Gold's mother has described him as "careless." Gold's special skill, as described by Professor Oak, is Pokémon hatching and is known as the "Breeder" (孵す者). He has the ability to draw out the largest potential of a baby Pokémon, having lived with Pokémon his whole life. No voice actors have been added to this character. Bulbasaur is a small, quadrupedal amphibian Pokémon that has blue-green skin with darker patches. It has red eyes with white pupils, pointed, ear-like structures on top of its head, and a short, blunt snout with a wide mouth. Small, pointed teeth are visible in the upper jaw when the mouth is open. Each of its thick legs ends with three sharp claws. On Bulbasaur's back is a green plant bulb that conceals two slender, tentacle-like vines, which grow from a seed planted there at birth. The bulb also provides it with energy through photosynthesis and from the nutrient-rich seeds contained within. Bulbasaur is sometimes seen seen napping in bright sunlight and can survive for days without eating. It is found in grasslands and forests throughout the Kanto region. However, due to its status as a first partner Pokémon, it is hard to come by in the wild and is generally found under the ownership of a Trainer. It has been recently seen living in the Terarium of Blueberry Academy. First partner Pokémon such as Bulbasaur are raised by Pokémon Breeders to be distributed to new Trainers. Having been raised by humans from birth, it is regarded as both a rare and well-behaved Pokémon. It is known to be extremely loyal, even after long-term abandonment. Bulbasaur has demonstrated a nurturing instinct towards younger, weaker Pokémon, such as using its vines to pick up a crying Pokémon and gently rocking it back and forth through the air while singing a "Bulba-by". Its bulb will flash blue when it is ready to evolve, but if it does not want to, it struggles to resist the transformation. Many Bulbasaur gather every year in a hidden garden in Kanto to evolve into Ivysaur in a ceremony led by a Venusaur. Its vines are long and strong enough to allow Bulbasaur to grab the branches of trees and pull itself up to reach Berries. As mentioned in Pokémon Sleep, Bulbasaur sits still and basks in sunny spots during its sleep, possibly trying to absorb nutrients from its seed to grow big. Black is a young man who aspires to be the Champion of the Unova Pokémon League. He has been dreaming of this since childhood, nine years to be exact. However, these dreams fill his head to the point where he cannot think about anything else and any attempts to cause him to pass out from mental exhaustion. With his Munna, Black can have him eat his dreams, which he refers to turning his mind from "blank white" to "solid black." Doing this allows him to think much more clearly, become smarter, and improve perception. Also, when he does this, he apparently sees in hexagons. Because of his dreams causing him to forget about other things, Black has the tendency to do things without considering the consequences of his actions and their effects on other people. As the series goes on, Black slowly begins to consider the feelings of others and even manages to be able to think about other things for brief periods of time. He has been described as "hot blooded" by several characters due to his loud nature and tendency to do things on his own. He doesn't understand show business like White does and many aspects of it surprise him, such as Gigi and Tep getting to stay in a hotel room while he and White have to camp out. He is very familiar with libraries and went there frequently as a child, allowing him to complete Lenora's Gym puzzle very quickly, setting a new record in the process. Black's tendency to dream also causes him to miss the things happening around him, such as when he completely forgot his promise with his friends Cheren and Bianca once he received the package holding the Pokémon and Pokédexes they were going to receive. Diamond, nicknamed Dia, is one of the two male protagonists in the DP series along with Pearl. Slow and dopey, he plays the role of the funny man in the Manzai standing comedy which he and Pearl practice. He usually adopts a happy-go-lucky attitude and follows Pearl's lead and decisions, but actually has his own opinions, especially when it comes to matters that stir up his emotions. This is a reflection of the virtue he represents: emotion, making him the most associated with Mesprit of the Sinnoh lake trio, the emotion Pokemon. In contrast to Pearl, Dia's character is relaxed and carefree, and according to Pearl, has never ever broken out in a rage, except the one clash he had with Pearl at Celestic. His gentle nature is interestingly opposite to the diamond, and is more comparable to the pearl, which has an ultimate smoothness. Diamond is a character in the latest series of the Pokémon Special manga in Japan, based on the main male character from Pokémon Diamond and Pearl. His appearance is based on the Diamond and Pearl Male character, Lucas. He started out with a Munchlax called Bee. He is twelve years old. Diamond is a good friend of Pearl and the pair form a Pokémon comedy duo, with Diamond acting as the boke (funny man) of the pair. Though seemingly dim-witted at first and possessing a perpetual habit of eating wherever he goes, Diamond is somewhat smarter than he looks. He stands up to foes in times of distress, and has been shown to be observant in a mishap involving wild Bidoof. Due to a mix-up, Diamond believes that he and Pearl are on a reality television series; if they successfully escort Ms. Berlitz to Mt. Coronet, they will receive a prize (this is untrue, however, as Diamond has suspected something was wrong since the beginning, and chose to stay silent so that the journey could continue). Berlitz, believing the duo to be her bodyguards, gives them Pokédexes, Pokétches, and starter Pokémon from Professor Rowan. Diamond receives a Turtwig from her and nicknames it Rū. Rū has now evolved into a Torterra. He has also recently obtained a Shieldon named Puu. No voice actors have been added to this character. Although by now her arms have been completely healed, Crystal has retained the habit of kicking her Poké Balls instead of throwing them. She's caught all non-legendary Pokémon for Professor Oak; more than any of the other characters in Pocket Monsters Special. She later adds Hoenn Pokémon to her collection and apparently begins to work full-time as one of Professor Oak's assistants. • Platinum Berlitz

Platinum is the female protagonist of the DP series, but she goes by the title Lady Berlitz, and her first name has been kept a secret since the beginning of the series until the story progresses to Canalave City. There were several occasions that her first name has been mentioned, but it has always been covered by other speech bubbles, as if being drowned out by other sounds or voices. This was deliberately done to wait for the release of the third sequel to Pokemon Diamond and Pearl, which title was planned as her first name. Platinum is a descendant of the prestigious Berlitz family, which is a wealthy clan in Sinnoh with a history of more than 200 years, producing fine scholars in every generation. A family tradition calls for each individual to travel to the summit of Mt. Coronet, and collect a special material to create an accessory bearing the family crest. Like her father Sir Berlitz, she is acquainted with Prof. Rowan and has worked as his assistant before she set out on her journey, allowing her to know a lot about Pokemon. Proud and arrogant, Platinum comes off as a spoilt girl, and only spends her nights at top-class luxurious hotels. She did not find it necessary to reveal her name to people of a lower class, as taught by her butler Sebastian, and thus refused to tell it to Dia and Pearl, whom she mistook as her bodyguards due to a mutual misunderstanding. However, Platinum actually has the heart of an innocent child underneath her perky exterior, and can sometimes come off as goofy even. As she weathered through various adventures under the support of Dia and Pearl, she gradually came to appreciate their presence, shared her glory of victory with them when she won the Super Contest, and even started addressing them by their first names after the incident at Veilstone City. When Sir Berlitz became Team Galactic's victim of false ransom, Platinum rushed to Canalave City to find him, during which she discovered the truth about Dia and Pearl's real identities, something the boys have known since meeting the real bodyguards but decided to keep a secret from her for the sake of sustaining the ties they've worked so hard to keep. Platinum took the news hard since she trusted the boys so much, and locked herself behind close doors. After sorting out her thoughts through a fitful night's rest, during which she dreamt of the boys perishing in an explosion, she made up her mind to continue their companionship. She revealed her full name to the boys after confessing her own lies throughout their journey, an act to make them equal as friends instead of the client and bodyguard relationship they've shared so far. According to Platinum herself, she reads at least 10 books each day since her childhood, and as a result, is very knowledgeable in many aspects, a reflection of the virtue she represents: knowledge, making her the most associated with Uxie of the Sinnoh lake trio, the knowledge Pokemon. She is almost like a walking encyclopaedia, which added to Dia and Pearl's misconception that she was a very professional tour guide at the beginning. However, Platinum believes that learning through first-hand practice is much more effective and interesting, and thus constantly wishes to try out and experience everything that comes along. It is therefore no surprise that she has decided to take on both gym and contest challenges, on top of many other things she desires to explore. She easily gets along with people due to her genuine interest and enthusiasm, and is acquainted with Cynthia, who has personally taught her about battling at Eterna. The same cannot be said about her relationship with Pearl at the beginning though, who has a hot temper and refused to accept the rude attitude of this 'tour guide.' Pearl often got mad at Platinum's arrogance and denials, most of the time pertaining to acts that she was trying to hide from the boys. However, he was amazed at her knowledge and perseverance, and almost always ended up helping her out despite complaining about it. Dia, on the other hand, has a secret crush on Platinum, and knew right from the beginning that she is a true lady. He actively supports her in all of her actions, and strives to keep her happy and protected all the time. Although seemingly weak and inept at battling when she started, Platinum has emerged as one of the quickest gym challengers in history, conquering six gyms in a matter of 25 days. Her journey has clearly equipped her with remarkable skills as a trainer, gaining the confidence of even Byron when she voiced her determination to thwart Team Galactic's evil schemes. Her talent lies in her ability to promptly put her experience and advice from others to practical use, with the help from her wide knowledge base. Her sources of inspiration ranged from Dia and Pearl's Manzai dialogue, her own drowning experience at the Great Marsh, and even the slot machines at Veilstone's Game Corner. Emerald is a character in the Pocket Monsters Special, a challenger in the Battle Frontier. He is an excellent battler and has proved it several times by defeating Factory Head Noland, Lucy, Brandon and Greta. He is also considered good at catching Pokémon, and for that Crystal has hired him to catch the legendary Jirachi. Despite his great interest in Pokémon battling, he claims to not like Pokémon very much. Since he got a Sceptile, Sudowoodo and Dusclops from the Battle Frontier, he seems to accept them more and more. He appears to be extremely short, and he is actually shorter than he looks. Under his long sleeved clothes he has high platform shoes, and he always holds a pair of external mechanical hands which he holds with his real hands. However, this is mostly tactical places to keep most of his capturing equipment, for example his platform includes several rows with different kind of Pokéballs. He also has a rare ability to calm Pokémon by making them remember their birthplace. He starts by spotting the Pokémon, and just by that he knows where it comes from. He then proceeds to pull out a small piece of ammo consisted by soil from the Pokémon's birthplace, and loads it into a special gun he carries. By shooting the ground the Pokémon is standing on, the feeling can calm the Pokémon in a matter of seconds. Noteworthy, he is the only character except Yellow who is not based on anyone from the Pokémon games, although a character appears in Diamond and Pearl with a somewhat similar appearance. Caterpie is an insect Pokémon that resembles a green caterpillar with a yellow underside and teardrop-shaped tail. Yellow ring-shaped markings down the sides of its segmented body resemble its eyes and are meant to scare off predators. Its most notable characteristic is the bright red antenna (osmeterium) on its head, which releases a stench to repel predators. Despite these features and its camouflage in green foliage, Caterpie is often preyed upon by Flying-type Pokémon. Its four tiny feet are tipped with suction cups, permitting this Pokémon to scale most surfaces with minimal effort. Caterpie is easy to capture and grows quickly, making it ideal for new Trainers. As Caterpie grow and develop over time, they will shed their skin many times before finally cocooning themselves in thick silk. It can also spit this silk to entangle foes as seen in the Pokémon the Series episode Ash Catches a Pokémon (EP003). It has a voracious appetite, driving it to eat a hundred leaves daily. It will even eat leaves bigger than itself. According to the 54th chapter of Pokémon Adventures, its favorite food is the Vermilion flower. Caterpie lives in temperate forests and jungles. As shown in Pokémon Sleep, Caterpie is known to sleep occasionally while using String Shot. On occasion, it drools out strings instead of saliva. Butterfree is a lepidopteran insect Pokémon which resembles a vaguely anthropomorphic butterfly with a purple body. Unlike true insects, it only has two body segments and four light blue legs. The upper pair of its legs resembles small, three-fingered hands, while the lower pair resembles long, digit-less feet. Butterfree has two black antennae, a light blue snout with two fangs underneath, and large, red compound eyes. Its two pairs of wings are white with black venation. Two oval scales on a female Butterfree's lower wings are black, but they are white on a male. The wings of Butterfree are coated with poisonous scales that easily fall off continuously as it flies. If inhaled, it results in several status conditions. Using this powder, it will defend Caterpie from bird Pokémon. This powder also repels water, enabling it to fly and gather honey even in the rain. Butterfree can use its sensitive antenna to detect the odors of blooming flowers six miles (ten kilometers) from its nest in search of nectar, which it carries with the hairs of its legs. Sometimes, it has territorial disputes with Cutiefly over fields of flowers. It also consumes sap from trees pierced by , as seen in the Pokémon the Series episode A Sappy Ending (EP121). Butterfree is found in temperate forests and jungles, but it is also observed in the episode Bye Bye Butterfree (EP021) flying near the ocean as part of its migratory breeding pattern. As shown in Pokémon Sleep, Butterfree is known to sleep while flapping its wings. It tends to accidentally scatter highly toxic dust while sleeping. Forms Butterfree has a Gigantamax Form. As Gigantamax Butterfree, its wings become shades of bright and dark green with a white pattern. A fur-like circle attaches to Gigantamax Butterfree's back at the base of the wings. Its antennae also become bright green and extend to the point where the tip bends, and three red clouds surround them. Its eyes glow bright red. Several green scales, created from crystallized Gigantamax energy, can be seen floating around Gigantamax Butterfree. These are its most effective weapons, capable of causing paralysis, poisoning, or sleep. Gigantamax Butterfree scatters these scales by the winds that it generates with each flap of its wings; these winds are powerful enough to lift a 10-ton truck. Ivysaur is a quadrupedal amphibian Pokémon that has blue-green skin with darker patches. On top of its head are pointed ears with black insides and it has narrow red eyes. Ivysaur has a short, rounded snout with a wide mouth and two pointed teeth in its upper jaw. Each of its feet has three claws on them. The bulb on its back has bloomed into a large pink bud. A short brown trunk surrounded by leafy green fronds supports the bud. The weight of the plant prevents Ivysaur from running fast and standing on its hind legs, forcing its legs to grow sturdy. When its flower is ready to bloom, it gives off a distinct, sweet-smelling aroma and starts swelling. Ivysaur will also start spending more time in sunlight in preparation for its upcoming Evolution. Exposure to sunlight adds to the strength of both Ivysaur and its plant. As shown in Pokémon Sleep, Ivysaur is known to sleep in sunny spots while undergoing its photosynthesis process. Researchers cannot decide if Ivysaur is awake or asleep during this process. Its mouth is wide with two pointed teeth in the upper jaw and four in the lower jaw. On top of its head are small, pointed ears with reddish-pink insides. It has three clawed toes on each foot. The bud on its back has bloomed into a large pink, white-spotted flower. The flower is supported by a thick, brown trunk surrounded by green fronds. A female Venusaur has a gynoecium in the center of its flower. Venusaur uses its flower to catch the sun's rays to convert them into energy, which causes the flower to become more vibrant. The flower releases a soothing scent that attracts Pokémon and calms emotions. This scent becomes stronger after a rainy day. Venusaur is at its strongest in the summertime when there is much more sunlight to absorb. As shown in Pokémon Sleep, Venusaur releases a soothing fragrance while sleeping. Venusaur has four different sleep styles it sleeps in: Sunbathing Sleep, Sturdy Sleep, Vines-Out Sleep, and Atop-Belly Sleep. In the Pokémon the Series: The Beginning episode Bulbasaur's Mysterious Garden (EP051), Venusaur has demonstrated the ability to manipulate nature, release several vines from its back, and lead evolution ceremonies for Bulbasaur and Ivysaur. This Pokémon is rarely found in the wild, but it has been known to inhabit grasslands. Forms Venusaur has two forms: Mega Venusaur and Gigantamax Venusaur. Mega Venusaur When Mega Evolved, the flower on Venusaur's back grows more prominent, and two smaller pink flowers bloom, one on its forehead and one on its rear. Its legs and back have become sturdier to support the extra weight of the flower. Additional leaves with woody stems, supported by vines, are also grown around the flower. Mega Venusaur also develops dark markings on its forehead below the new flower on its forehead. Gigantamax Venusaur As Gigantamax Venusaur, it becomes larger with its flower blooming even further, covering its body. These flowers have a taller bud and extraordinarily thick, springy petals capable of shielding Gigantamax Venusaur. Its eyes have light green sclerae and orange irises. More foliage grows from under its flower, and the trunk supporting it becomes shorter. It has several light green markings located at its belly. Gigantamax Venusaur attacks with its thick vines, which are powerful enough to topple down a 10-story building. Gigantamax Venusaur's flower can similarly spread enough pollen to resemble a volcanic eruption. Breathing in this pollen can cause uncontrollable sneezing, and inhaling large amounts can even cause fainting. However, this pollen also promotes plant growth in areas where it lands. A male has black flexible necks, whereas a female has brown necks; both genders have brown legs. Each foot has four digits ending in a sharp claw. Both heads have an identical brain. However, it is believed that on occasion they may possess different brains. It is also theorized that the two heads communicate with some form of telepathy for coordination. Even when sleeping or nourishing itself with food and water, one head is usually awake and alert and keeps a keen eye out for enemies. The two heads switch turns every hour or so, with both only sleeping at the same time when they feel completely safe. Both heads have the same genes and battle together in perfect sync. Due to its almost non-existent wings, it cannot fly very well. However, it has developed legs that make it a powerful runner. Reaching speeds of 60 mph (100 km/h), it energetically strides across the plains leaving large 4-inch (10-centimeter) deep footprints behind it. Golduck is a blue, bipedal, duck, or platypus-like Pokémon. It has red eyes, a cream-colored beak, a red gem in the center of its forehead, and four spikes on the back of its head. Its hands and feet all have three clawed digits with cream-colored webbing in between. Its body is specially adapted to have a hydrodynamic shape, and it has a long tail that it uses as a rudder to steer. Golduck is sometimes mistaken for the Japanese monster, and the physical inspiration for Golduck, the Kappa due to its general humanoid shape, beak, and webbed hands and feet. Golduck is a fast swimmer, capable of out-swimming even the most athletic of humans because of its webbed appendages. Even rough seas do not hamper this Pokémon's swimming abilities, and it will sometimes rescue people from shipwrecks. The TCG depicts Golduck with the ability to shoot massive jets of water form both of its hands simultaneously, using them to propel itself underwater. The gem on its forehead glows when it uses its psychic powers, and occasionally when it swims at full speed. In the past, this Pokémon was overhunted due to the belief that the gem granted people supernatural powers. As seen in Pokémon Adventures, Golduck has the ability to give knowledge to its Trainer and fellow Pokémon through telepathy. Golduck can typically be seen swimming in lakes, where it hunts fish. The prey is disabled, captured, and then brought to shore for consumption. Old tales claim Golduck punishes those who defile their rivers by dragging them in and taking them away. As mentioned in Pokémon Sleep, Golduck is known to paddle its webbed limbs while sleeping. It is believed Golduck is dreaming about swimming. Evolution Golduck evolves from . (Source: Bulbapedia)

Graveler is a bipedal, boulder Pokémon. Its round body is covered with small bumps and it has a rocky crest above its small eyes and mouth. It has four arms, each with a three-fingered hand. Its second pair of arms is typically kept tucked against its chest. It was shown in Pokémon Snap that, despite having legs, it can revert to a legless form. This grants it the ability to float. Graveler's preferred locomotion is rolling, as it is a slow walker. It often rolls down mountain paths at high speeds exceeding 60 mph (96.56 km/h), crushing objects in the way and stopping by running into huge rocks should it build up too much speed. It does not pay attention to obstacles, so it may potentially harm hikers as it rolls. However, it will explode if it rolls into a river. Graveler is known to be generally free and uncaring, not minding if pieces of itself break off since they can regrow over time. It climbs a mountain from base to summit, feasting on rocks all the while. Graveler's favorite food is moss-covered rocks, regularly consumming tons of them and making loud noises while eating. Upon reaching the peak, it rolls down to the bottom. Graveler live in horizontal holes that they gouge out in sheer cliff faces, and they are capable of withstanding volcanic temperatures. As mentioned in Pokémon Sleep, Graveler is known to rock back and forth while sleeping. It is believed that it dreams about rolling down hilly paths. Forms Graveler has a regional form: Alolan Graveler. In the Alola region, Graveler looks similar to its regular counterpart, but with a silvery sheen. It lacks defined digits on its upper limbs and has two toes on each foot rather than three. There are several small, yellowish crystals scattered across its body and iron sand attracted by magnetism. This black sand creates crystal-like formations above its eyes, across the tops of the upper pair of arms, and on the sides of its face. Alolan Graveler has a very quick-tempered personality. It feeds on rocks, with its preffered food being dravite, which creates the yellow crystals on its body and grants it electrical abilities. It often fights with others over food, and when two smash together, they generate a flash of light and a booming sound; for this reason, people refer to it as "the fireworks of the earth". Similar to its Kantonian counterpart, Alolan Graveler rolls down mountain paths; however, instead of flattening obstacles as it rolls, it sends them flying by zapping them with electricity. They can be found in the Canyon Biome of Blueberry Academy's Terarium, where Alola's island life is simulated. Evolution Graveler evolves from and evolves into . Golem is a bipedal tortoise-like boulder Pokémon with a spherical body covered by a shell of plated, green rocks. Its body is so hard that even dynamite cannot scratch it. Its head protrudes from the center of the shell. The head has a flat snout with two pointed teeth in the lower jaw and red eyes. It has short arms that have three claws and two legs with feet that have four claws in front and one in back. The head and limbs are light brown. Golem grows bigger by shedding its skin once a year. The discarded shell immediately hardens when exposed to air, crumbling away and returning to the soil. Farmers are known to collect Golem's shells. Golem's soil is spread across fields to promote crop growth. However, it stops shedding with age and moss grows over its shell. As shown in the Pocket Monsters Carddass Trading Cards, Golem's shell is hollow, despite it looking like it is not. As shown in The Bridge Bike Gang (EP036), Golem can withdraw its head and limbs into its shell and roll at high speeds. It is dangerous when doing this, as it is unable to see and may crash into or run over anything in its path. To prevent it from rolling into the homes of people downhill, grooves are dug into the sides of the mountains to divert the rolling Golem's course. It is seldom seen in the wild.
