Synopsis

Six minors (16 or 17 years) answering to the nicknames of Joe, Mario, Suppon, Baremoto, Heitai and Kyabetsu are put into a reformatory for offences such as aggravated assault, swindle, flight, etc. Their stay in hell begins immediately. Accommodated by a doctor paedophile, they are placed under the monitoring of a despotic and brutal crew. Companions of cell of certain Sakuragi (called Anchan), the tension flares up between the band of buddies and their new "friend." A brawl breaks out and our six prisoners are done rossés by mysterious young man thanks to his boxing talent. The story will not only follow the lives of these seven characters surviving in their hellish environment, but also their disillusions due to the rejection by the outside world and by their close relations. This is about the extraodinary and invincible friendships between these young men.

Publication notes

Rainbow: Nisha Rokubou no Shichinin won the 51st Shogakukan Manga Award in the general category, along with Taiyou no Mokishiroku Dainibu: Kenkokuhen. The series was serialized in Young Sunday until its final issue on July 31, 2008. Serialization transferred to on June 15, 2009. The series was published in French by Kazé in 3-in-1 omnibuses from October 7, 2015 to May 24, 2017.

    Sakuragi Rokurouta, aged eighteen, and referred as 'An-chan' by his cell mates. He is the oldest of the seven main characters. He is strong and has great boxing technique which he used to take on all the six newcomers when Mario instigated a fight at their first encounter. After defeating the six, Sakuragi is punished by the guard, and even while beaten brutally, he protected the six by taking all the blame. They learned the harsh reality of the world they were now in, and the six new cell mates realized that Sakuragi is in fact a kind person that is worthy to look upon and soon start to refer him as An-chan (can be translated as an 'intimate bro'). Sakuragi is the pillar and key figure through his words and actions for the rest throughout the series, especially Mario. The reason why Sakuragi has been detained is unknown at first. Rumors are he killed his own parents.

    Minakami Mario is one of the seven main protagonists in RAINBOW. The seventeen year old, nicknamed Mario has been detained to two years of confinement in the Shonan Special Disciplinary School. He was found guilty of inflicting grave injuries on one of his teachers who attempted an act of violence towards a female student. Mario is strong willed and hates being looked down upon. He was the first one to start a fight in day one soon after being confined in a cell with Sakuragi.

Maeda is one of the seven protagonists in RAINBOW. He is the smallest guy in the group and the most cunning in the team. Other than An-chan, he seems to get along with Jou best, most probably because of them being same aged and both being orphans.

He offered Sakuragi a cigarette in the first day to beg for mercy as Sakuragi took all six of them on in a fight started by Mario. He has a younger sister named Megumi.

    Matsu'ura Mansaku is seventeen and is one of the seven protagonists in RAINBOW. He is nicknamed Cabbage. He has been detained for violence and underage drinking. He performed an act of violence while drunk, leaving the victim with grave injuries. Despite his huge figure, Mansaku is quite gentle in nature and probably the most calm amongst the seven cell mates. He showed his caring nature by wiping away the blood clots from Sakuragi's body after he was heavily beaten and left senseless for being in a fight with new cell mates by the inspector in charge.
