Publication notes

Rakudai Ninja Rantarou was serialized daily from April to June and October to December of each year. After author Soubee Amako suffered a stroke in January 2019, the series went on hiatus, and that year's serialization was replaced with a series of "best of" reruns. Due to the difficulty of continuing a daily serialization, the author decided to end the serialization, with the last reruns appearing in the December 28, 2019 issue.

Since he lost his family to a war before the start of the series, he's been making a living working several part-time jobs. Entering the academy hasn't changed this, and he still works several jobs on the side and has earned the nickname "Genius Part-timer". He has a great head for business, an even greater love for money and is very proud to call himself an extreme skinflint. He can also make out the sound of dropped coins from great distances and will instantly take off in the direction of the sound whenever he hears it. Since entering the academy, he's been staying with Doi-sensei during school holidays.

His father is a ninja and his mother a mostly retired kunoichi, and he entered the Ninjutsu Academy to become a ninja himself as well. However, his dream is to become a first-rate ninja instead of a mostly unemployed one like his father. This might be a difficult goal to reach, since like the rest of Class 1-Ha he's easily distracted and mostly focused on goofing off and having fun together with his best friends Kirimaru and Shibei instead of studying. As a member of the famously unlucky Health Committee, he's often the victim of bad luck of all kinds.

Age: 10 Birth Place: Sakai Class: Year 1, Class Ha Committee: Equipment Committee A kind and friendly boy who's the son of a rich merchant, Shinbei quickly became best friends with Rantarou and Kirimaru at the beginning of the series when they all entered Ninjutsu Academy together. Not the fastest of thinkers, and as he loves to eat he's rather pudgy as a result. He's unusually strong, however, and has an amazing sense of smell that's stronger than a dog's - which he usually uses to sniff out food. His constantly runny nose is his trademark, and since his snot is extremely sticky he often uses it as a weapon.
