About this title

Synopsis

The Achiga Girls' Academy in Nara once defeated regional mahjong powerhouse Bansei High School. It advanced into the national team semifinals but lost to the eventual champion, and the mahjong club was later disbanded. Six years later, elementary school student Shizuno Takakamo befriends transfer student Nodoka Haramura. The two eventually enter Achiga Girls,' but Nodoka transfers out of the school in the second year. When Shizuno sees Nodoka on television the following year as the national middle school individual mahjong champion, she decides to revive Achiga's mahjong club.

Saki: Achiga-hen - Episode of Side-A was initially serialized in Shounen Gangan until March 12, 2013, where it was concluded with 20 chapters. On March 25, 2020, the series restarted after 7 years in Big Gangan under the same title.

Shizuno Takakamo is a first-year high school student at Achiga Girls' Academy in Nara Prefecture and the main protagonist of the spin-off manga, "Saki Achiga-hen episode of side-A". In her elementary school days, she befriended Nodoka Haramura and together they played mahjong in Achiga's mahjong club. She was the club's second best player before it was disbanded. Upon seeing Nodoka on television as the middle school individual champion, she decides to re-establish the club upon entering high school. Her goal is to go to the national high school team tournament and play against Nodoka. Shizuno is an energetic, athletic girl, and is easily excited. She enjoys hanging out with her friends whenever possible and tries to have as much fun as she can. She becomes a worthy opponent due to her never-give-up attitude. When the team falls into despair or lacks motivation, she will always step up and cheer them on.

Harue was once known as the "Legend of Achiga" for taking the school to the national high school team mahjong tournament. After the team's defeat, she lost confidence and stopped playing mahjong for some time, leading to the team's eventual disbandment. She was later scouted by a professional team but returns home several years later when the company decides break the team up.
