Synopsis

At a very young age, Kousei Arima was strictly taught how to play the piano and meticulously follow the score by his mother, to the point where he dominated every competition he entered with ease. He earned the title of "Human Metronome" for performing almost perfectly. Every musician of his age looked up to him. However, after his mother suddenly dies, he became tone-deaf due to the shock and then disappeared, never to be seen onstage since. Two years later, Kousei lives a monotonous life with his childhood friends Tsubaki Sawabe and Ryouta Watari supporting him. He continues to cling to music, although performing is still an impossibility for him. This is until his unexpected encounter with Kaori Miyazono, a violinist who performs freely without the dictations of a score. Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso was nominated for the fifth Manga Taisho Award in 2012 and placed 13th in the final ranking. In the following year, it won the 37th Kodansha Manga Award in the Shounen category. The series was published in English as Your Lie in April by Kodansha Comics USA from April 21, 2015, to January 3, 2017, and as omnibus volume since October 22, 2024. It was also released in Spanish by Milky Way Ediciones from March 27, 2015, to January 29, 2016; in Brazilian Portuguese by Panini Comics from April 26, 2017, to December 2018; in Polish by Studio JG from March 11, 2019, to May 4, 2021; and in Romanian by Nezumi since September 1, 2023.

Age: 14-15 Birthday: July 4 Kaori Miyazono is one of the main protagonists of Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso. She is a violinist who helps Kousei Arima return to the piano world after his mother's death. Kaori Miyazono is a free-spirited violinist whose playing style reflects on her personality. She is independent, unpredictable, and short-tempered. It is also touched upon that she is passive aggressive at times. Kaori likes to depend on herself and only herself and can be seen as more of a support for others. While considered a really sloppy violin player from a technical standpoint, such as not following music score sheets the way they are written, Kaori is an amazing violinist. Noted by one of the judges at Towa Hall during the first competition of the series, her pure abilities far exceed the others in the competition. She wields a free spirited style of performance that emphasizes emotions and artistry over the pure mechanics of music, such playing to specific tempos and dynamics originally intended by the composer. Her style of music is what rekindles Kousei's passion for the piano and inspires him to redefine himself as a musician. Age: 14-15 Birthday: March 28 Kousei is a prodigy pianist and was the youngest pianist to win the Saki Competition but quit playing after the death of his mother resulted in his inability to hear the sounds of his own playing. Following the death of his mother, he lived two years without playing the piano and saw the world through monotone colors, but this changed after meeting Kaori Miyazono, a beautiful young musician who pushed Kousei to his limits in an attempt to get his fingers back onto the piano keys. Birthday: May 19 Tsubaki is Kousei's childhood friend. She has always gone to his performances and cheered him on. Tsubaki would often invite Kousei to play outside but due to his practice time with his mother, she usually ended in failure. Being with Kousei for a long time, Tsubaki gradually took on the role as an "older sister." Kousei was that "useless little brother she just had to take care of." Rather than the music type, Tsubaki was the athletic type. However, he does once in a while come up with good insight. Ryota is a bit of a play-boy. He seems to prefer girls who are "cute" seen as he comments in episode 1 that when he sees Kaori for the first time he stated that Tsubaki did a good job on finding a cute looking girl.
