About this title

Synopsis

Wataru Minakami is a top student who failed his high school entrence exam because of a computer glitch . He later discovered that he was accepted to Stargazer Hill Academy, which is located at a mysterious place called Promised Island. At the request of his father, Wataru is whisked away to the island, and before he can settle in, a dozen of cute and charming girls start to flock him and claim to be his younger sisters. As Wataru gets closer to his newfound siblings, a deeper mystery as to why they were sent to the island comes to play. (Source: ANN)

The brother whom all of the sisters adore. In their eyes, he can do no wrong. Until the final set of illustrated stories, the brother's face was always hidden or turned away from the reader to keep his appearance hidden. The intention was to have the reader believe he was the character. As the series came to its end, a slightly modified version of the character design from the anime was used. As the father of the siblings is never present, and the mothers of the sisters are regularly preoccupied by their upper-class careers, Wataru serves as much a parent figure as he does a brother. He devotes extraordinary time to teaching or guiding them through various life crises, no matter how trivial or difficult they may be. For this reason, the sisters attribute many of their personal accomplishments to him. Despite their unwavering testimonies, Wataru is not perfect, even in the magazine stories and mini-novels. He is unquestionably selfless however, and will do everything in his power to aid his siblings whenever humanly possible. Wataru also seems to possess an uncanny ability to show up exactly when a sister needs him most. Understandably, the greatest fear of the sisters share is someone or something taking Wataru away from them. For this reason, some of them entertain and dream of somehow becoming his wife or life partner. The inclination is far more innocent and less disturbing than it initially may sound: there are no incestuous intentions. As pure as Wataru’s sisters are, they show signs of jealousy and concern when a non-family member "takes" their brother away from them, fearing he may forget or leave them. (The name Wataru Minakami was given to the brother character only for the first Sister Princess television series. In Sister Princess Re-Pure, he is simply referred to as 兄, Ani, or "Brother.")

Due to her timid nature, she tends to cry upon the slightest trouble, as well as utter the phrase “kusu”, in hopes that her beloved brother will come ‘save the day’ for her. According to the creators, she originates from France. Her elegant dressing of frills and lace is a further emphasis on that. She is extremely fond of cute things (animal plushies), sweets, and especially parfait. Aria has also been shown to possess many child-like qualities; such as a vivid imagination of the things around her, the referring to herself in third-person, and to speak in an awkwardly slow fashion. All twelve sisters has a unique way of calling their brother, and Aria addresses him as Nii-ya (兄や), which is perhaps the most childish way to call brother.

Mamoru can be described as the sports girl type. Very athletic and energetic, she always looks forward to spending time with her brother, whether it be camping, running with him in sports events, going for a bicycle ride, or even teaching him how to swim. One of her signature features is jetting along in roller skates. Since she's more adapted to wearing sports related clothing, she easily becomes embarrassed when it comes to wearing a dress. In RePure, it's obvious that she really values the time that she gets to spend with her brother, just the two of them, when she plans out a camping trip. Although viewed as somewhat of a tomboy, that image doesn't bother her as long as her brother is with her, supporting her in any way possible.

Mysterious, aloof, and occasionally gothic, Chikage is very much into spellcraft, the occult, and religion. She is an accomplished practitioner of dark magic, but prefers to utilize her sorcery in subtle methods, rather than brute power. Common images associated with her are the Christian cross and butterflies. Addresses her brother as Ani-kun (兄くん) (-kun is an address a boy who has a close relation or was about the same age as the address; gives the impression that her age is close to the brother's). In the anime, Chikage claims that she and the brother have been together in previous lives, possibly as brother and sister, perhaps as lovers. She expresses a desire to have him for herself somehow, but admits that he has refused the offer or simply slipped from her grasp several times throughout their incarnations. Out of all the sisters, she is the only one who entertains thoughts of somehow taking the brother away from the others, and almost executes plans to do so. Sakuya behaves very much like a modern teenager and is fashion conscious. She would love for her brother to see her as woman and not just a sister. In both anime, Sakuya claims that she and the brother are connected by the "red string of fate" and expresses the desire that she might somehow marry her brother. She is quick to agree it would be impossible when in his presence. In the anime, Sakuya is arguably the most emotionally vulnerable of all the sisters where the brother is concerned, since she goes through extreme emotional reactions when they are separated—or when she anticipates separation. In the first anime, Sakuya frequently uses double entendres and innuendo when speaking to her brother, dismissing her words as jokes when he becomes really flustered. Sakuya addresses her brother as Onii-sama (お兄様, Onii-sama?) as her sign of admiration. Her birthday is December 20, is a Sagittarian, and is the tallest of the sisters at 159 cm (about 5' 3"). Karen is the first sister that Wataru meets on Promised Island and is considered the heroine of the story, since she seems to speak for all of them with how much they love and care about their big brother. Knows how to play piano, is sweet, gentle, and is your all around good girl. In the anime when Wataru first arrives and almost drowns in the ocean, she comes to his rescue, and soon meet again when he hears her play the piano at school. In Sister Princess RePure, she adores her older brother as her hero, when he makes a dress that he gave her as a present more stunning that it originally was. It's been said that out of all of the sisters, Karen is the one who seems to have the strongest heartfelt and emotional connection with her brother. Supposedly, Karen is the only sister who is fully related to Wataru.

Yotsuba can best be described as chirpy, cheerful, and full of curiosity, as she wants to know all of her brother's secrets. This little detective is never anywhere without her magnifying glass, as she's always checking things. Her signature phrase"checki" always comes up when she's investigating something very interesting. Yotsuba comes from England and is one of the three new sisters that made her first appearance in 2000 in Dengeki G's magazine and the first Sister Princess game. In Sister Princess RePure, she brings up an interesting point about how much all of them really know about their brother. She teams with Rinrin in order to find out more about him, and like the rest of her sisters, wishes to become closer to him.

Shirayuki can be considered a little Miss Iron Chef, as she loves to cook and always comes up with new ideas, especially when comes to cooking for her big brother. Her specialty not surprisingly, is sweets, as it suits her personality very well. She really puts her heart into her cooking and is delighted when she makes something that her big brother really enjoys. In the anime, we notice that at first her cooking skills are initially something left to be desired, since she comes up with some strange concoctions; but becomes an amazing cook within a short period of time. You can always see the amount of excitement that she has, especially when it comes to her brother. In fact, in the anime in one episode she gets so excited that she ends up making too much food just for him, a humorous point that goes to show just how big of a heart she has for her big brother.

Hinako is the youngest of the 12 sisters, and just like all of them, wants to be around her big brother when possible. She enjoys playing all sorts of games, writing cute little letters and messages, and likes storybooks, especially when Wataru is reading them to her. When she goes off to search for a missing teddy bear, even after Wataru endlessly helps her to search for him, she tells him that, "If onii-tama is with me, I don't need anything else." It really shows that even as young as she is, her playfulness expresses how much she likes her older brother. In her story in Sister Princess RePure, we really get to see how much she adores him in a fantasy sequence where she goes on a little adventure on a rainy day and meets a frog prince, but still continues on to eventually find the one that she likes most, her big brother.

Haruka is the sister that represents the image of the ideal Japanese woman. She is very skilled in archery and fighting with the naginata, and practices many traditions including tea ceremonies, singing, and dancing. She looks out for her older brother and readily protects him from any impending danger. At the same time, she's a really shy person when it comes to her brother and always blushes when she is close to him. Haruka is from Germany and was one of the three new sisters that was introduced into the series in 2000, making her first appearances in the ongoing stories of Dengeki G's magazine and in the first Sister Princess game, just before the development of the anime series.

She always encourages both herself and everyone around her. Although a bit clumsy at times, this is a unique characteristic that makes her very adorable, as she usually brushes off a little accident with a giggle and a smile. She shows the greatest amount of enthusiasm when cheering for her big brother. Sometimes she herself needs a little bit of encouragement, especially when personal problems arise that affect her own self-esteem. Her big brother being with her at just the right time always helps to bring back her positive energy. Kaho enjoys flower gardening. In both Season 1 and RePure Season 2, you notice that she takes great pride in the flowers that she plants for Wataru, and hopes that they can eventually create their own beautiful flower garden together.

Rinrin is the mechanical genius of the sisters and is always hard at work with her inventions. Early on, one of her creations that we meet is Mecha-Rinrin, a giant robot that usually accompanies her. She definitely has a talent for machines and anything mechanical as she makes messenger phones, a submarine, and is even in the process of creating a robot replica of herself. In Sister Princess Repure, she teams up with Yotsuba to form a detective duo to find out details about their big brother that they don't know. Unfortunately, this takes away from really showing her amazing skills as an inventor that are prominent throughout the first Sister Princess anime series and in the original stories. Like all of her sisters, she really puts her heart into her work, as she wants her brother to be happy. And of course, any help and encouragement that her brother Wataru can give her always puts a smile on her face.

Marie enjoys reading romance and adventure novels. When she travels around, her dog Michael is always with her. One of her defining qualities is the warmth and emotion she feels with natural settings such as the ocean, the wind and summer sun, and even the peaceful nature of the forest. Since she previously wasn't able to go outside due to her condition, she would imagine being at these places in her stories. When she finally met her brother, her dream was to walk along the beach in a beautiful sunset with him. Although implied as somewhat frail, being with her brother has given her strength and happiness in her life.
