About this title

Synopsis

In one unusual Tokyo high school, education takes a backseat to brawling as warring clubs wreak havoc in the hallways and chaos in the classrooms, all vying to be the baddest team around! Although they often contribute their fair share, only a handful of students serve to stem the tide of violence in this untamed outpost. These are the few, the proud, the powerful: the members of the Juken Club! (Source: CMX)

Publication notes

The first 18 volumes of Tenjou Tenge were published in English as Tenjho Tenge by DC Comics under the CMX imprint from March 1, 2005, to September 8, 2009, before the publisher went defunct. The CMX release came under heavy criticism from fans for editing and censoring the sexual content. VIZ Media republished the series uncut as Tenjo Tenge: Full Contact Edition under the VIZ Signature imprint as 2-in-1 omnibus volumes from June 21, 2011, to February 5, 2013. It was also published in Italian by Panini Comics from September 2001 to August 25, 2011; and in Brazilian Portuguese by Editora JBC from January 2009 to July 2011.

Age: 16 Birthday: November 23 Zodiac: Scorpio Class: 2nd year student of Todo Academy Known relatives: Takayanagi Dougen (father), Takayanagi Mitsuomi (brother) He is the younger brother of Mitsuomi Takayanagi, but the two aren't on good terms. Masataka is your average high school student at first glance, but he is a surprisingly powerful martial artist. He is always a formidable fighter, but he becomes much more dangerous when he is serious or angered. He actually is easygoing and somewhat shy; however, his inner nature is perverted, even though he dislikes this part of himself. Masataka falls in love with Aya Natsume at first sight, but is disheartened when she falls in love with Souichiro Nagi instead. He has maintained a crush on her, yet is oblivious to the other girls who have a crush on him. After the incident at the bowling alley, he is greeted by some blushing girls from Todo Academy, he is seemly ignorant of their intentions. Aya describes him as the calm surface that gently envelops the rapids. Masataka is set up early as a great fighter, but is later ignored. At one point in the OVAs, Sōichirō refers to him as a supporting character. Despite being a great fighter, and one of the more powerful characters, Masataka is one of the most poorly treated characters. Because his elder brother is the president of the executive council, Masataka purposely joins the opposing Juken club. Soon after he meets Aya for the first time and falls in love with her, Masataka and Maya Natsume come across Bob Makihara and Souichirou. Bob is amazed someone can make Souichirou seem so helpless in a one on one fight, as Masataka beats up on Souichirou. Angered by this, Masataka says for the first time he actually feels like beating up Souichirou, and does another KI attack. Souichirou distracts him by using his "barrier," where he shoves the unwanted bento Aya made for him in Masataka's face. Masataka attacks Souichirou in a berserker rage who gives him a severe beating. Techniques

Bunshichi is a 20-year-old, white-haired man. His parents are relatively young since they had him at an early age and own a rice shop that Bunshichi helps run. He has been a senior for 3 years, but still has not graduated. He is not unintelligent, rather he claims the Shin incident ruined his beautiful school life causing him not to graduate. After having to fight his friend and the break up of Katana, Bunshichi prefers to stay away from the school's politics. He joined the original Juuken Club solely so they would have enough members to compete in the election tournament. Later as a member of the Enforcement Group, Mitsuomi Takayanagi appoints him as the advisor (essentially their strategist), where he again does nothing claiming he only signed up in name only. Bunshichi is perverted, usually focusing on women with big breasts, which he refers as deadly weapons. In the manga he repeatedly threatens to rape people, it is a joke of his own perversion, as he has not carried out these threats.Despite his appearance and attitude, when Bunshichi actually fights, he is quite dangerous. He was ranked as the strongest fighter in Todou until Mitsuomi won the Tournament 2 years ago. During his time as the commander of Katana's Special Forces, he single-handedly defeated all their enemies. He became known as a so-called "God of Fighting" as a result.Bunshichi is likely one of the few characters that might be capable of lasting the full 3 minutes with Mitsuomi. He is easily one of the most powerful characters in the series; however, Bunshichi seems to be on his own side, Emi Isuzu even refers to him as a possible enemy despite the fact he too is part of the Enforcement Group. Despite how powerful he is, Bunshichi is frequently used as comic relief.

Age: 15 (close to 16) Birthday: May 8th Height: 165 cm Weight: 58 kg Mother: Makiko Nagi Father: Kago Souhaku Souichirou is a brash, blonde, spiky haired teenager, who enjoys fighting. As a child, Souichirou was bullied and tormented because his family consists of demon exorcists, and were not well liked as a result. The apartment he shared with his mom was also covered in offensive messages. Souichirou started fighting early as a result, beating up those who tormented him. In elementary school, he met up with his best friend Bob Makihara, and they started calling themselves the Knuckle Bombs. The pair go to school beating up everyone they find until they have been proven the strongest. Upon arriving at Todo Academy, Souichirou quickly learns he is nowhere near as strong as he thought. Souichirou fights using street fighting methods as opposed to real martial arts. He prides himself on being a thug and therefore he fights without honor, usually with cheap shots, etc... However, he does seem to draw line when it comes to hitting women. After training with Maya Natsume, he learns more martial arts moves including the Forged Needle attack. Throughout the Manga, it is shown that Souichirou and Aya Natsume have some sort of mental connection between them that calls to the other when they are in trouble. Souichirou is a teen obsessed with fighting and takes a lot of pride in that. Ironically, he believes that fighting doesn't resolve anything, and fights more for fun than anything else. Initially, he is believed to have an average, or below average intelligence. He is very cocky and gets angered easily, and always has wise cracks. He isn't very good with being around girls, because he had little contact with them up until high school because they thought he was creepy. When he enrolled into Todo Academy, he fought Masataka Takayanagi resulting in him losing his first major fight. He falls in love with Maya Natsume, because she is similar to him. Through out the series, he repeatedly has shown he has trouble showing any affection towards people he cares about. Souichirou is slowly changing, and starting to become more intelligent and starting to build the charisma of a leader. For example, Souichirou actually gets Kagesada Sugano (almost solely referred to by his nickname asshat in the manga or scum in the anime) to once again become an active Juken Club member. Their initial encounter seems to inspire Kagesada to quit his typical cowardly behavior and fight. Souichirou also occasionally breaks the fourth wall. The two most notable instances of this are in chapter 3 when he states that he's supposed to be the "hero," and in episode 24 of the anime when he refers to Masataka as a secondary character. Aya is in love with him, but he seems uninterested because he is in love with Maya, although later on in the series he shows signs of liking or possibly loving her, not reacting so drastically when Aya shows her affections and trying to protect or comfort her (such as in chapter 109 when Souichirou, after Aya's fight with Hirohiko, goes to check on her because he is worried about her even though he won't admit it, which ends up in him receiving a kiss from her outside of the shower where they first met). Maya's feelings for Souichirou are unknown. Later on, Shizuru Kamura, she also develops a crush on Souichirou and views Maya as an enemy as a result. Soichiro also seems to be rather protective of his mother, even though it doesn't seem so initially. He plans to drop out and take over her work so she can finally retire after he competes in this years tournament.

Age: 15 Gender: male Relatives: Chiaki (wife) Bob Makihara is a young man from South Africa, hence most in the series refer to him as "the foreigner." Despite his heritage Bob is depicted as having blue eyes. He is known for his long dreads, and a muscular build (in fact he is one of the most physically strong characters in the series). Little is known about his past, except that his father was a first lieutenant of the U.S. Navy and he met up with Souichiro Nagi during his 2nd semester in his third year in elementary school and started calling themselves the knuckle bombs. His girlfriend's name is Chiaki, and they seem to really love each other. Souichiro is his best friend, and he also appears to respect Masataka. Bob seems to enjoy fighting, and is a very skilled fighter. He definitely has better powers of perception than Souichiro, as he almost immediately picks up on the fact that something is different about Toudou academy. He also recognizes that someone much stronger than Masataka Takayanagi and Maya Natsume is lurking around. Bob frequently doubts his abilities and Maya's training, mainly due to the attention he gets from Mitsuomi Takayanagi. Despite Mitsuomi offering to train him and make him the "sharpest blade in the school," Chiaki convinces Bob to stay with the Juken club. He later seems to regret the decision when he still has to be saved by Masataka despite all the training Maya put him through. Even though he doubts the value of his training he remains with the Juken club. (Source: Wikipedia)

Kagesada is an arrogant yet cowardly student at Todo Academy. His freshman year, he was clueless about the nature of the school. He arrogantly thought he could actually win the School's Election Tournament. He was quickly put in his place by a teacher, who scared him into realizing he was a nothing in Todo. During this incident, his teacher "christened" him Asshat (Scum in the anime). The nickname stuck, as he was referred to almost solely by his nickname for the majority of his appearances. After that point he tends to be rather cowardly, running from fights etc. By his senior year, he is highly knowledgeable about the school and the tactics of the Executive Council. He appears to be good friends with Shinichirō Kurei, and Masataka Takayanagi appears to respect and have faith in him as well. (Source: Wikipedia)
