Van Fanel386 fan favoritesExternal profileBirthday: April 12 Sign: Aries Prince of Fanelia, pilot of Escaflowne, Van Fanel suddenly appears on Earth one day, fighting a Dragon. His life narrowly saved by Hitomi, a schoolgirl caught up in the battle, Van returns to his kingdom only for it to be torched to the ground a few days later. Van vows revenge on the perpetrators—the Zaibach Empire—even when he finds that Folken, his supposedly dead elder-brother, is working for them. With Hitomi's help, Van hones his fighting abilities and begins to predict his opponent's moves, giving him the upper hand: he is however, deeply effected by his blood-pact with Escaflowne, which requires that he shares the bodily damage it suffers in battle. Van Fanel is the young half-Draconian king of Fanelia who must learn to cope with drastic changes in his life after Fanelia is destroyed by Zaibach. He pilots Escaflowne, a Guymelef made by the mysterious Ispano tribe which can transform into a flying dragon. He earns his right to pilot Escaflowne through a blood pact which connects his body and soul to Escaflowne. Due to the blood pact and Hitomi's influence, Van becomes injured when the Escaflowne is damaged, and these wounds will not close until Escaflowne is repaired. Consequently, if Escaflowne is destroyed, Van will die. His destiny and Hitomi's are linked, and he is initially dependent on Hitomi's clairvoyant abilities, which save his life more than once. He also holds a grudge against Folken for leaving his native kingdom of Fanelia for Zaibach and Dornkirk for his grand ambitions. Due to being half-Draconian, Van is able to manifest a pair of feathered wings which enable him to fly. (Source: Wikipedia) In the 1994 manga, Van is a hot-headed, short-tempered young prince. Much like in the anime his home country of Fanelia is destroyed and he allies with Allen to battle Zaibach. However in the manga he does this initially to rescue his mother, Queen Escalina, and along the way grows more mature and responsible for all the survivors of Fanelia.
Dilandau Albatou187 fan favoritesExternal profileA mentally unstable pyromaniac with a bizarre and shocking past, Dilandau is the tactically ineffective commander of the Zaibach empire's elite Dragonslayer's unit. Diandau takes no prisoners, and burns towns to the ground with little provocation. After being wounded in a sword-duel with Van Fanel, Dilandau becomes fixated upon him, and places vengeance over all other objectives (with as much fire and collateral damage as possible, of course). In the 1994 manga, Dilandu has a drasticly different design and character. He has dark skin and black curly hair that grows longer over the course of the manga. In the manga he is one of the most fearful knights of Zaibach, and he destroys the kingdom of Fanelia and kidnapps Van's mother Escalina. He keeps her alive, but is ordered by Donkirk to kill her, at which point he defects from Zaibach and runs away with Escalina as his captive. From there he pretends to work together with the resistance against Zaibach, but he has grander plans in the works.
Hitomi Kanzaki125 fan favoritesExternal profileHitomi is an ordinary school-girl with a crush on her track-team leader, Amano. She meets and saves the life of Van, a young prince from that crossed a portal from a different world in order to slay a dragon. Transported to Van's world, Gaea, she finds her fate is intertwined with his, even if her heart still belongs to Amano and later Allen, a gallant knight who bears an uncanny resemblance to Amano. Lost in Gaea with no apparent way to return home, Hitomi finds that her hobby of tarot card reading is becoming frighteningly accurate, complete with visions of both the past and future that shed light on this new, war torn world. In the 1994 manga, Hitomi is mostly similar. She's a school-girl with a crush on an older student, Amano. She's into tarot card reading, and has strange dreams about a prince from another world. During an earthquake her soul is brought to that other world, Gaea, and placed in an energist crystal to give her a human form. Through the energist, Hitomi gains powers to control the mech Escaflowne together with Prince Van, and they set out to save Gaea, and the Earth, from destruction.
