Synopsis

The hero of Tensei shitara Ken deshita differs from your standard otherworldly protagonist in that he is reincarnated as a sword! Beginning his quest by spawning in the middle of a beast-ridden forest, he encounters an injured girl frantically fleeing for her life. Saving her from her assailants, the pair acquaint themselves, and the girl introduces herself as Fran. She bears a heavy past, having endured the enslavement and maltreatment of her tribe, the Black Cats. As the hero is unable to remember the name from his past life, the young and tenacious Fran bestows him the name "Shishou" and becomes his wielder. Publication notes

Tensei shitara Ken deshita was initially released as a web novel on the user-generated site Shousetsuka ni Narou in October 2015. Micro Magazine acquired the rights to the series under the GC Novels imprint and began publishing volumes in July 2016. On May 30th, a limited edition fifth volume was released and bundled with a drama CD with voices provided by Satoshi Hino and Inori Minase, among others. Tensei shitara Ken deshita has been published digitally in English as Reincarnated as a Sword by Seven Seas Entertainment under the Airship imprint since May 2, 2019, and in print since August 6, 2019.

Fran is a black cat beastkin that embarked on a journey with her parents in order to search for a way to evolve. However her parents eventually passed away and she got enslaved as a result. Due to various circumstances, she crossed paths with the sentient sword and they both freed each other. Since the enslaving process robbed her of her name, the sword bestowed unto her the name "Fran," as that was how her parents called her. In return, Fran named the sword Shishio/Master, since he saved and taught her many things. She also gains a darkness wolf familiar named Urushi. She loves curry.

A former japanese reincarnated into a mysterious sword which slept on a pedestal in the middle of some hidden ruins. After "awakening," the sword quickly learned to both move and fight on its own by using magic, and that it had the ability to absorb a monster's core to raise its strength. After building up some power, it grew bored and decided to depart the ruins to explore new lands, but got stuck on a mana-depleting zone and lost its freedom for several weeks. Eventually, a black cat beastkin slave found it by chance while fleeing from a monster and the sword helped her regain her freedom. As a result both decided to continue together and the sword bestowed the girl with a name (Fran) and a contract which shares its abilities with her. Fran in return named the sword Shishou (Master). Shishou eventually also summons a familiar and names it Urushi, which ends up as Fran's familiar as well.
