The King of Fighters: A New Beginning is based on the 2016 PlayStation 4 game The King of Fighters XIV developed by SNK. The series was published in English by Seven Sea Entertainment from March 10, 2020, to August 31, 2021. It was also released in Brazilian Portuguese by NewPOP Editora from November 5, 2021, to March 15, 2023.

Since the KOF '95 project began with the concept of introducing Iori as Kyo's rival, he became known as a character who was a member of a rival school of martial arts that had a connection to the Ancient Arts of the Kusanagi. He was also given the ability to use a different color of flames other than Kyo's (red flames), along with various other characteristics. When you think of Iori Yagami, his intense personality most likely comes to mind. His moves are unique, and his singular choice of hairstyle, wardrobe, and manner of speaking was certainly a personality that broke the mold for characters in fighting games at that time. During the initial location tests to determine the popularity of the game, Iori was the character who stood out most. After this, everyone was looking for Kyou and he hid in the US for a while. But he was eventually caught by NESTS, who used his DNA to create various "clones." Kyou eventually returned to the tournament and his friends. After Nests was defeated, Ash Crimson comes in hoping to steal the powers of the Three Sacred Treasure Team who are Kyou, Iori, and Chizuru; however two of Kyou's teammates have their powers stolen leaving Kyou the last remain.

Shun'ei is the main protagonist of the new story arc which was started in The King of Fighters XIV. He is the fourth protagonist of the series, succeeding Kyou Kusanagi, K', and Ash Crimson. Shun'ei is a manipulator of illusions. Due to his mysterious powers, he was abandoned at a young age by his parents and was raised as a disciple of Tung Fu Rue. Through his training, Shun'ei learned how to control his powers. As Tung's last disciple, he sets out to challenge other fighters from all over the world with his close friend Meitenkun.
