Synopsis

What if it's possible to extract some two or more years of a person's memories (projected onto visual display for all to see) from the brain after the person's death? It would certainly be beneficial for solving difficult murder cases since the memories would display the victims' last moments. But at what cost? What of the dead's privacy as strangers poke about in their most private memories? What about the effects the imageries may have on the persons whose jobs require going through psychotic murderers' minds and experience whatever emotions and feelings these murderers felt as they skin and disembowel their victims? In The Top Secret, Shimizu-sensei explores the idea of re-displaying images of decedents' memories from their brains.

Publication notes

Top Secret won the Excellence Award at the 15th Japan Media Arts Festival in 2011. The series was adapted into a Japanese live-action movie that was released on August 6, 2016.

Maki is in charge of leading the section nine, the brain scanner group which can retrieve up to five years' worth of memories from people's minds and therefore, solves the mysteries behind their murders. He's admired by Aoki for being nonchalant and serious with his work. Maki favors Aoki most as a newcomer to section nine. He looks rather young and feminine which amazes Aoki time to time. Maki is said to have shot his best friend years ago, and people also believe that it's the reason why he's not smiling at all.

Aoki is the main character and plays the role of the everyman and the newbie in the show. He knows how to read lips, which is an invaluable skill since the memories have no sound. He also empathizes with the victims whose secrets he ends up exposing. He also harbors secret feelings for his sister which he tries to subdue.
