Synopsis

Every time a widespread supernatural incident involving youkai occurs in Gensokyo, shrine maiden Reimu Hakurei usually solves the dire situation by confronting the perpetrator. However, cases targeting specific people where culprits hide their identities are usually too delicate for the youkai exterminator to handle. Enter Satori Komeiji, the mistress of The Palace of Earth Spirits. As a satori youkai, she possesses a third eye that allows her to read minds, detecting any criminal no matter what lies they may try to pull off. Touhou Chireikiden: Hansoku Tantei Satori went on hiatus following the February 2021 release due to the health concerns of the original artist Ginmokusei. The series resumed serialization on October 2021 with Yuu Akimaki as the new artist.

She is the miko of the Hakurei Shrine, a remote building far in the east where the boundaries of Gensoukyou and the human world overlap. It is believed that she is the 13th of her line. Reimu is very easygoing—some would say lazy—and hates to train. As such, even though she's naturally talented, her offensive and magical abilities are only average. However, she has a strong sense of duty, and if it's for the sake of Gensoukyou she can overcome almost any obstacle through sheer perseverance. Her main abilities are to "fly", good intuition, and getting along with everyone; even those who were once her enemies. In the games, she is characterized by her homing amulets and yin-yang orbs. Her ability to fly should not be confused with the ability to "float" possessed by most characters in the Gensokyo Universe. In Japanese, the translation for "fly" could mean "to be isolated from others," "to be uncertain/undefined," "to have no basis," and finally "to float." For example, in Eastern and Little Nature Deity, Chapter 2, Reimu successfully walks across a magically dissimulated river without even knowing it exists. Basically, it is assumed that Reimu's ability to "fly" could be translated to floating, and as if it were not defined in the world, having no basis and even passively doing things that are considered impossible by nature and can only be explained this way. Satori is the Mistress of the Palace of the Earth Spirits after the underground city was separated from Hell. Her ability to read "minds" makes various youkai and spirits fearful of her, while leaving her well-loved by the animals that normally can't be understood. With these animals as pets, she manages the ruins of inferno where her home stands. Her great number of pets made it difficult to manage the Hell of Blazing Fires, so she entrusted parts of its management to some of her pets. Her pets would oversee other pets. Her pets would tend the gardens. Her pets would play with her younger sister. However, what shouldn't have happened did: a human came from above ground, and she was surprised when they started asking about evil spirits and a geyser. Satori left Orin in charge of the evil spirits and Utsuho in charge of the Hell of Blazing Fires. They were both loyal to Satori, so they shouldn't have done any harm. She believed there was no way they'd start some sort of incident. She thought that perhaps the human before her was spouting off lies and trying to trick her, so she read her heart and was surprised again by what she saw. There was almost nothing to be seen inside the humans' hearts about the evil spirits or the geysers. Suspicious, Satori decided to test them. After an encounter, she permitted the Heroine passage towards the Hell of Blazing Fires to ask her pets about their supposed problem. The characters for Komeiji literally mean "ancient and pure/bright earth". Satori isn't written in kanji, but it's pronounced the same as "satori" (悟), which means "enlightenment, profound understanding", as well as the name of her youkai species. A vengeful spirit that escapes from former hell, prompting Satori Komeiji to search for her. She's capable of possessing both humans and youkai, taking complete control of their body and even their abilities. Her victims have no memories of anything that happened while they were possessed. Using this possession ability on youkai will also drain all of their magical energy, resulting in them falling into a coma.
