About this title

Synopsis

Located within Gensokyo's human village is Suzunaan, a bookstore that both sells and lends out books. Managed by Kosuzu Motoori, a huge bibliophile who loves collecting various types of reading materials, the store is known for having numerous books from the Outside World. Despite her seemingly innocent demeanor, Kosuzu has a unique ability to decipher all written languages—fueling her desire to secure even the most dangerous of books. The deadliest books—called "youma books"—are written by youkai and embedded with their powers. Because of this, obtaining and stockpiling youma books in a small place such as Suzunaan poses an extreme risk that Kosuzu may yet encounter. [Written by MAL Rewrite]

She is the miko of the Hakurei Shrine, a remote building far in the east where the boundaries of Gensoukyou and the human world overlap. It is believed that she is the 13th of her line. Reimu is very easygoing—some would say lazy—and hates to train. As such, even though she's naturally talented, her offensive and magical abilities are only average. However, she has a strong sense of duty, and if it's for the sake of Gensoukyou she can overcome almost any obstacle through sheer perseverance. Her main abilities are to "fly", good intuition, and getting along with everyone; even those who were once her enemies. In the games, she is characterized by her homing amulets and yin-yang orbs. Her ability to fly should not be confused with the ability to "float" possessed by most characters in the Gensokyo Universe. In Japanese, the translation for "fly" could mean "to be isolated from others," "to be uncertain/undefined," "to have no basis," and finally "to float." For example, in Eastern and Little Nature Deity, Chapter 2, Reimu successfully walks across a magically dissimulated river without even knowing it exists. Basically, it is assumed that Reimu's ability to "fly" could be translated to floating, and as if it were not defined in the world, having no basis and even passively doing things that are considered impossible by nature and can only be explained this way. Marisa is a human witch who lives in a cluttered house in the Forest of Magic. She is friends with Reimu and visits her often, but otherwise is solitary and spends most of her time researching magic. She is also an avid collector stuffing her house with various items, and would go "borrowing" things from others without returning them. She is selfish, sometimes violent, and has a disagreeable manner. Underneath, though, she is honest and a hard worker. This makes it strange that she is friends with Reimu, whose powers are purely from talent while she had to work very hard to get her own to the same level. Kosuzu Motoori is a carefree human girl living at Human village and working at the Suzunaan book renter. She has just recently gained the ability to dechipher all books by just touching them. She uses this ability for reading youkai books, not caring much about their dangerous nature. Kosuzu is shown to be acquaintances with Reimu Hakurei, Marisa Kirisame and Hieda no Akyuu. Kosuzu Motoori is the main character of Touhou Suzunaan - Forbidden Scrollery. Youkai books: Youkai books, or in other words youma or demon books, are books written by youkai. They can be old classics simply written by youkai, books written for humans by youkai, or grimoires used by magicians. Most often though, they are books recording a youkai's existence. For a youkai which has its existence denied, the only hope to escape the fate of disappearing entirely from the cycle of reincarnation is to record its own existence and seal oneself in a book, waiting for a chance to be revived again. Reading youkai books with a youkai's existence recorded in it can be dangerous, as there is a chance the youkai might be revived. Most of the time youkai books are unreadable by humans, as they are written in unknown characters. This is why youkai books are very rare in Human village. Kosuzu Motoori however, who has the ability to dechipher any book, enjoys reading and collecting them, stating that she no longer has interest in normal books. She prides herself as the No.1 collector of youkai books in Gensokyo. Suzunaan Book Renter: Kosuzu Mootori is a worker in this traditional Japanese style book renter. Despite being a book renter, it also seems they sell and print books. It is stated that The Gensokyo chronicle (Perfect Memento in Strict Sense) written by Hieda no Akyuu was also printed here. Suzunaan mostly deals books from the outside world, but recently Kosuzu has started collecting youkai books for the store in secret. No voice actors have been added to this character. She then appeared as a playable character of Hopeless Masquerade, she was a 6th and 8th Day Boss of Impossible Spell Card and a Playable Character in Urban Legend in Limbo and Antinomy of Common Flowers. She is a recurring character in Forbidden Scrollery. She is a bake-danuki of proper lineage, and a youkai of the Outside World who has been called over by Nue Houjuu (by her own judgment), as a means of resistance since the Saint who sings of youkai extermination, Toyosatomimi no Miko, revived. She is the current "Child of Miare" (御阿礼の子), who is born in the Hieda family once in every few hundred years with the ability to "not forget anything she sees" and record Gensokyo's history. She seems to like red tea. Despite her young age, her memory goes back 1200 years. It is because every "Child of Miare" of the Hieda family is a reincarnation of the previous "Child of Miare," who inherits the memories of the previous incarnates. She is the ninth reincarnation in the line. It seems that no one but herself and Yukari know this, though she does mention part of it to Reimu during Memorizable Gensokyo. Each time she reincarnates her life span gets shorter and shorter, and each Child of Miare works on a written record of Gensokyo's history called the Gensokyo Chronicle.
