About this title

Synopsis

Standing at the summit, Aoi Yukimura makes a promise with her childhood friend, Hinata Kuraue, to climb the mountain together again when they grow up. However, the two friends lose contact as the years pass, and after a playground accident, Aoi is left with a fear of heights. Having shifted her interest toward indoor hobbies, Aoi is content to start high school at her own pace. Her expectations soon change when she reunites with Hinata, who quickly reminds Aoi of their promise. While Aoi is initially hesitant, a familiar scenery evokes memories of the mountaintop. Wanting to rediscover the pastime, Aoi agrees to join Hinata and go climbing once more—an adventure that will not only lead to new sights but also new friendships. [Written by MAL Rewrite]

Age: 15 Birthdate: February 19, 1998 Blood type: B Height: 152 cm Weight: 43 kg A few years ago, Aoi had made a promise with Hinata that they would climb mountains together, but after a bit of a nasty fall off a playground attraction, she ended up with a broken arm and a fear of heights, which eventually lead to her preferring indoor activities such as cooking, sewing and reading. However, once Hinata approached her at the start of high school, Aoi once again is drawn towards the lure of the mountains. She is very shy and refuses invitations to go out from classmates by giving convincing reasons. On the other hand, she doesn't like to lose and Hinata sometimes teases her so that she'll try harder at something. While she sometimes feels self-aware regarding others' "girl power," she doesn't lack much of it and has improved her cooking skills by staying at home, so she can handle cooking well while on the mountains. She's a total novice when it comes to mountaneering but after going climbing with Hinata, she uses the internet to gain more knowledge and develops an interest in it. When she first reunited with Hinata she didn't have a very good impression of her and even though she didn't show it, Aoi wasn't enjoying being with her. Takao, where she headed in the hopes of seeing dwarf flying squirrels, but was foiled when one of her shoes' soles partially tore off. Aoi's first impression of her is that of a "forest girl." Both of her parents work, so she's good at housework in general. She likes cute things, especially animals and is particularly fond of horses. In addition to real horses she loves horse-themed mascots such as Muuma-kun (a mascot character from Hanno) and Gunma-chan. Although her physique is delicate, she has physical strength and is dexterous with her hands. However, that came to an end when Aoi had her accident. After that they separated during junior high but met again by chance in high school, where she saw the opportunity to reignite Aoi's interest in hiking. For Aoi, she wasn't a very pleasant friend in the past and even after they meet again she forcefully pulls Aoi around and skillfully goads her into going with her own plans. But on the other hand, she really treasures Aoi as a friend and although they fight sometimes, Hinata treats her with consideration. Although she may look rough, Hinata is very perceptive of her surroundings and she has a sensitive side. She's also smart and gets good grades in school, however she can't cook at all. The two exchange phone numbers and email addresses, and Kaede eventually joins the circle of mountaineering friends. According to Aoi she is tall, well-dressed and cool. She is Aoi's first friend aside from Hinata and is a good mentor to her. Her hobby is mountain climbing, which she often does alone. However, she's not good at cooking. She manages her mountaineering and equipment expenses by working at a part-time job. Not much interests her outside of the mountains. She's lazy and especially careless when it comes to fashion, evidenced by her usually being seen in a sports bra and a pair of shorts when she's in her room and when she goes out, she doesn't put much effort into her appearance. She is told by Aoi and her friend Yuuka that she's a 'waste of a good figure', and is encouraged to pay more attention to her appearance. Even though she doesn't study hard, she can get the same score as Yuka if she works hard and if she's intent on it, she can go as far as to be within the single digits in her class' ranking. However, in the anime she is portrayed as the type who won't put in any effort unless she's desperate. Originally she went mountain climbing alone but after starting to go with Aoi, she shared her knowledge and experience with her as her mentor and looked out for the other girls.
