About this title

Synopsis

With the depletion of the life force of the world of Sylvarant, a chosen of legend rises to regenerate the dwindling mana. Lloyd Irving travels with his friend and the chosen Colette Brunel, along with the schoolteacher Raine, her younger brother and whiz kid, Genis Sage, and the enigmatic mercenary, Kratos. They break the seals of the Summon Spirits to awaken them and activate world regeneration, but it's during this crucial journey that they discover a much darker reality behind their mission to save Sylvarant. Based on the popular video game of the same name.

The only thing he has in mind at the beginning of the game is to protect Colette, as that is what he is assigned to do. However, as the journey processes, Kratos begins to open up a little, giving out hints about a past where he did a terrible mistake. Throughout the early stages of the game, Kratos displays outstanding knowledge of the ancient world, raising Raine's suspicions as to his true intentions. Despite his malevolent secret agenda, Kratos takes a keen interest in Lloyd's development as a warrior, although he takes a fairly callous approach to this. Through a side-quest, Kratos will train him in swordsmanship and give him advices that help the younger boy to grow. Despite his long life and many years of experience, Kratos is, up until the end of the game, a fatalist, for a long time not realizing that Mithos’ way is not the only possible way to save the worlds. He is rarely serious and acts as a comic relief for the group, always ready to cheer the party up at heavy-hearted moments. Quite the ladies' man (one of his possible titles is called Gigolo, which he gets by speaking to every female character in the world, while another, Casanova, can be received by his being in a party with three female characters), he has the ability to charm every woman he sees, who in turn give him gifts (the player will be able to take this advantage in the game). Zelos is quite handsome, and approaches most situations hoping to meet or impress any pretty girls nearby. He takes almost every opportunity to hit on his female team members, much to their annoyance, especially given the nicknames he gives them. He gets along poorly with Genis, whom he considers a brat. However, he is actually quite perceptive, and can be surprisingly sensitive at times. After Corrine sacrifices himself to save Sheena at the Temple of Lightning, Sheena becomes depressed. In one of the optional Z-Skits, the player sees that Zelos is still acting lighthearted, as if Corrine had not just died. He is then chastised by the other members of the party for his lighthearted approach. When they leave, Zelos remarks to himself that, if the party members continue being visibly upset, Sheena will only get more depressed, and will not move on with her life; the only way to help her get over the loss is for them to move on. Contrary to what one might assume, Zelos is actually very similar to Colette in some aspects. Both of them tend to bottle up any worries or insecurities they might be feeling and mask them with cheery personalities so that they don't have to deal with others in the party asking them is something is wrong. Both of them also have to deal with the consequences of hoarding such feelings, in that they suffer alone and they ultimately end up causing others in the party to feel guilt for not noticing that something was bothering them sooner. His best friends are Genis Sage and Colette Brunel, who he accompanies on her Journey of World Regeneration as one of her guardians. Lloyd is an brave man and a good fighter, but he isn't that good at school, he mostly sleeps there and forgets the subject matter very quickly, but he is very serious about protecting his friends and defending his ideals. He also has an acute knowledge of Exspheres and his knowledge about it is often needed.

The Chosen of Sylvarant, Colette is a kind, selfless girl who always puts others before herself. Throughout the game, Colette is shown to be quite clumsy, as her repetitive tripping causes the most unusual (and usually beneficial) things to happen, from making a hole in the wall at school to deactivating the most complex machinery. Being the Chosen and Sylvarant's only hope for regeneration, her early life was somewhat sheltered in order to protect her. She is rather clueless, as she often misses some things that are obvious to everyone else. However, she knows what it means to be kind to people and is able to "smile and forgive" (as Presea puts it) almost anything. Colette has a tendency to hide her problems from others, such as her Chronic Angelus Crystallus Inofficium. This often annoys Lloyd since he wants to help her, but Colette hates making others worry for any reason. It is implied that she has romantic feelings for Lloyd, but, being as she is, she prefers not to say so. Instead, she loyally stays by Lloyd's side, subliminally letting her behavior speak for itself. Colette is primarily a ranged fighter and fights using two chakram. (Source: Wikipedia)

She is originally sent to Sylvarant by the Pope and the King with orders to assassinate Colette, but events cause her to end up joining the party instead. Shihna is tough but kindhearted, and is always accompanied by Corrine, a man-made Summon Spirit. She's also the person Zelos loves to flirt with most, but she usually manages to rebuff him. At the age of nine, Shihna ventured to the Temple of Lightning with people from Mizuho in order to form a pact with Volt, the Summon Spirit of Lightning. Unfortunately, Volt speaks a language that only certain scholars can comprehend, and as she couldn't understand what he was saying (specifically, his unwillingness to form another pact after being betrayed by his last summoner). Volt went on a rampage, killing a quarter of Mizuho's population and putting the chief of Mizuho (Shihna's adoptive grandfather) into a coma. In some ways, Shihna is a stereotypical teenager, switching between refusing to admit her feelings and trying hard to do so. Because of his actions, he and Lloyd are exiled from Iselia, and the two join Colette's Journey of Regeneration. The Sages are both half-elven, but they pass themselves off as full-blooded elves to avoid discrimination. After experiencing racial discrimination in Tethe'alla, Genius starts to express a hatred for humans, but remembers that his friends are themselves human. Genius is a great cook, like Regal. Genius also holds a deep crush on Presea Combatir, which begins as soon as he first sees her. He tries to hide it for a little while, but his feelings for Presea soon become apparent to the party. Genius is a magic-user, and fights with powerful elemental attacks. He casts spells by way of a kendama, using it to help him focus and attack enemies as well.

Refill is Genius' older sister and Iselia's schoolteacher. Refill is calm and levelheaded, but is overly fascinated around ruins of any kind. She raised Genius from childhood all by herself, and doesn't hesitate in resorting to physical violence to teach Lloyd or Genius a lesson. Refill is the complete opposite of Genius in cooking, and tends to make rather repulsive food, as noted by Lloyd and several other members. She takes comments about her cooking straight to heart and usually loses her temper.
