About this title

Synopsis

A thousand years into the future, Earth has been destroyed by powerful aliens known as Gauna. Although mankind has fled into space, the giant spaceships they now call home are still constantly being targeted by the strange creatures. Piloting mobile weapon units called "Gardes," humanity is able to take a stand against their adversaries by destroying their cores, preventing the monsters from regenerating their protective shell of placenta. Within the vessel Sidonia, a boy named Nagate Tanikaze surfaces from its depths for the very first time in his life. With an incredible amount of time clocked into pilot simulators during his isolation deep within the ship, he quickly proves to be an indispensable asset to humanity's defense force. Sidonia no Kishi won the 39th Kodansha Manga Award in the general category in 2015. It also won the 47th Seiun Award for Best Comic in 2016. The series was published in English as Knights of Sidonia by Vertical, Inc. from February 5, 2013, to April 26, 2016. It was also released in Italian by Panini Comics under the Planet Manga imprint from October 22, 2011, to April 28, 2016; in Polish by Kotori from April 8, 2016, to March 19, 2019; in Brazilian Portuguese by Editora JBC from April 9, 2016, to March 21, 2018; in Spanish by Panini Comics from November 2, 2017, to August 27, 2020; and in Russian by XL Media from December 22, 2017, to December 2023.

Izana is a new third gender that originated during the hundreds of years of human emigration into space. They can become either a male or female depending on the other party's gender, or they can have asexual reproduction to make a clone of themselves.

Similar in size and appearance to a guardian, but having a gauna-like appearance, her prowess in combat is rivaled only by Nagate's. She becomes friends with Nagate and Izana, usually interacting with them at their house by a tentacle she sneaks by the vent system while her main body stays at her hangar. The series' main protagonist. Despite having a hard time adapting to Sidonia's way of life and getting in trouble constantly while being rejected by other humans due to not being aware of the laws and attributes of the new culture, he eventually becomes the spaceship's population's savior, main defender, and hero over time. He pilots an older but capable Guardian mecha model called "Tsugumori." Unlike most Sidonians who were genetically engineered to have the capacity to receive most of their energy requirements through photosynthesis and only need to consume food for only once a day, he is a pure human who has to consume adequate amounts of foods to satisfy his energy and nutritional needs.
