Synopsis

Toaru Kagaku no Railgun is a short story in Arts and Sciences City that takes place in the time period between September 3 and 10. Academy City has a exchange program with the rest of the world that allows some students to travel for this week to other places, and some students are allowed into Academy City during this time. Mikoto, Kuroko, Saten and Uiharu went to the Arts and Sciences City, made on a artificial island off the coast of California for a field trip. The Arts and Sciences City is known as a city that has cutting edge technology (in terms of the standards of the 'Outside' of Academy City—i.e. it is still far behind that of Academy City's), and is trying to take over Hollywood as the entertainment capital of the world. Stuntsmen and shows occur frequently at this city, and anything out of the ordinary is treated as another show. Due to the climate apart from sleeping everyone wears their swimsuits all the time. She is fond of cute, childish things, such as flowery pajamas and Gekota, the popular frog mascot franchise. She has a strong sense of morals and hates injustice, contrary to what she claims. Her power is to generate electricity; she is powerful enough to cause a blackout in the city, make instant railguns by using coins as projectiles, and use electricity to magnetically attract iron particles around her into a chain-sword whip. She can also manipulate electrical objects such as networks and security systems. She has a one-sided rivalry with Touma, who nicknames her "Biribiri" (ビリビリ, relating to the sound of an electric shock), ever since their first meeting before the events of the first novel when he first dissipated her electricity. A Level 4 ESPer, she is a member of Judgment, a special public committee group whose duty is to maintain peace and order in Academy City. She has an unhealthy obsession with Mikoto, who she calls "Onee-sama" (big sister); she is on the constant lookout for a chance to get physically intimate with Mikoto (and getting called a pervert in the process), and tends to get jealous if someone else gets her attention; this unfortunately happens to be Tōma since he has caught the attention of Mikoto for various reasons. However, it's been shown on few occasions that she is genuinely in love with Mikoto, even allowing herself to get severely hurt (see Tree Remnant arc) in order to help Mikoto. Shy and humble, she goes to Sakugawa Junior High, different from Shirai's, and is known for wearing a headband made of flowers on her head, and sometimes a surgical mask as she constantly suffers the flu.
