Synopsis

Thirty years ahead of the rest of the world scientifically and home to millions of students enrolled in the esper development program, Academy City never sees a dull moment. Here, espers are given one of five power levels, the highest of which consists of only seven members. Mikoto Misaka, a middle school electromaster, ranks third among these individuals, and is known as "The Railgun." In a city known for housing extraordinary individuals, it comes as no surprise that extraordinary things tend to happen. Recently, makeshift bombs disguised as everyday objects have been ominously finding their way into public areas. Mikoto's best friend, Kuroko Shirai, has been investigating the case as a member of the student-based disciplinary committee Judgement. As more and more of these incidents come to light, it becomes apparent that a hidden darkness exists within Academy City, one that may not only impact Mikoto and her friends, but also the fate of the city itself. She attends Tokiwadai Middle School, a famous girls' school for the rich and elite psychics and one of the five elite schools of Academy City. To most people, she is considered a proper lady, but in reality, she has a short-tempered, prideful, and improper attitude with some tomboyish tendencies and insecurities, a fact few other characters know. She is fond of cute, childish things, such as flowery pajamas and Gekota, the popular frog mascot franchise. She has a strong sense of morals and hates injustice, contrary to what she claims. Her power is to generate electricity; she is powerful enough to cause a blackout in the city, make instant railguns by using coins as projectiles, and use electricity to magnetically attract iron particles around her into a chain-sword whip. She can also manipulate electrical objects such as networks and security systems. She has a one-sided rivalry with Touma, who nicknames her "Biribiri" (ビリビリ, relating to the sound of an electric shock), ever since their first meeting before the events of the first novel when he first dissipated her electricity. A Level 4 ESPer, she is a member of Judgment, a special public committee group whose duty is to maintain peace and order in Academy City. She has an unhealthy obsession with Mikoto, who she calls "Onee-sama" (big sister); she is on the constant lookout for a chance to get physically intimate with Mikoto (and getting called a pervert in the process), and tends to get jealous if someone else gets her attention; this unfortunately happens to be Tōma since he has caught the attention of Mikoto for various reasons. However, it's been shown on few occasions that she is genuinely in love with Mikoto, even allowing herself to get severely hurt (see Tree Remnant arc) in order to help Mikoto. She is classified as Mikoto Misaka's best friend. Shy and humble, she goes to Sakugawa Junior High, different from Shirai's, and is known for wearing a headband made of flowers on her head, and sometimes a surgical mask as she constantly suffers the flu. She has a sweet tooth but is often called for Judgment duties before she can enjoy her sweets. She displays various skills with the use of the computer, such as repelling hackers and information gathering.
