Synopsis

Victim of treachery, the army from the prestigious kingdom of Parse is defeated by its traditional enemy, the Lusitania. Its capital, Ecbatana, falls victim to the flames. Alone Arslan, the young heir to the throne, Daryoon, a general who remained loyal, and Narsus, an ex-military strategist retired with his disciple Elam, managed to escape. They will soon be joined by Gieve, a wandering minstrel, Alfreed, heiress to the country of thieves who is infatuated with Narsus, and the beautiful Pharangese, priestess devoted from her birth to the protection of Arslan. Committed to reclaiming his throne, Arslan will have to fight the Lusitanian invaders and the one who proclaimed himself the only legitimate heir: Hermes, the knight of the silver helm. Thus begins a long and sore struggle for Arslan, a young man who has disliked war for all of his fourteen years, but who nonetheless will aim to free his country from slavery and and shatter the collar shackle of aristocracy... While these are true to a point, Arslan is also philosophical, intelligent, and charismatic, able to rally even the most apathetic of people to his cause. Formerly a high-ranking military officer, Daryun is demoted from his position in the opening of the anime. His new mission is to protect and serve Arslan. Daryun and Arslan become close friends. In the style of samurai, Daryun is loyal to a fault, and at point tells Arslan that whatever his true origins may be, Daryun regards him as his prince. Gieve is the only player who does not make a strong allegiance to any side in the various battles that take place. While he self-identifies as a musician, it would be more apt to say that Gieve is a rogue-of-all-trades. He is the most versatile fighter in the series, capable of using a sword, a bow, or a lance, and also claims that he can play any instrument in the world. In the OVA, Gieve is also known for breaking the fourth wall: when he is alone, he will address the audience and narrate his thoughts on what is going on in the story (though it could be said that he is merely talking because he loves the sound of his own voice). She maintains her mystique throughout the course of the story, so that little is known of her personally. In the beginning, all that is known about Silver Mask is his obsessive desire to torture and kill both Andragoras and Arslan. He is serving as the leader of the Lusitanian forces but is in fact a Parsian himself and soon commands a regiment of collaborators.
