About this title

Synopsis

The first Getter Robo series chronologically published 15 years before the rest of the manga. Getter Robo pioneered the idea of the combining and transforming robot. Millions of years ago, the dinosaurs were driven deep underground due to the sudden arrival of "Getter Rays" on Earth. After evolving into sentient beings, they grew bitter and vengeful at the humans who replaced them on the surface and began plotting their attack on humanity. Fighting against them is Getter Robo, a machine built by Professor Saotome which uses the mysterious Getter Rays as its power source. Piloting it are three strong-willed young men—the violent martial artist Nagare Ryoma, the psychopathic yet highly intelligent revolutionary Jin Hayato, and the hot-blooded judo master Tomoe Musashi. Each controls one of three specially designed combat jets which can be combined together in different forms to form three different kinds of giant robots: the flying, axe-wielding Getter-1, the quick, drill-wielding Getter-2, and the tough, tank-like Getter-3.

Ryoma is the original leader of the Getter Team and the protagonist of many of the Getter Robo adaptions. In the original manga, he is portrayed as an extremely violent martial artist and the son of the "Dojo Destroyer" Ichigan Nagare. Ryoma is first discovered by Professor Saotome's assistants when he breaks into a karate tournament to take revenge on them for disgracing his father's name. Impressed, Saotome follows this up by sending three hitmen after him as a test of his ability. Ryoma kills all three men and in his weakened state, is kidnapped by Saotome and taken to his research center. There, he meets Saotome and his daughter and son, Michiru and Tatsuhito. Soon after, the research institute is attacked by dinosaurs, and many of the staff, including Tatsuhito are killed. Saotome tells Ryoma to pilot the incomplete Getter Robo in place of Tatsuhito against the attacking dinosaur empire. Ryoma succeeds at this and continues to serve on the Getter Team as its leader. In the TV adaptation, Ryoma's character is drastically different. He is now a football player and seems to be more easy-going.

The second pilot of Getter Robo, Hayato is portrayed as a psychopathic yet highly intelligent delinquent. He is first seen as the leader of a student revolutionary group but is captured by the Saotome Research Institute after a fight with Ryoma and pulled into the Getter Robo storyline, initially as the pilot of Getter-2. He is the only character to have appeared in every Getter Robo series and has fulfilled many roles, from being a regular teenager to an adult colonel and an aging scientist. Like the other Getter Robo characters, his portrayal is drastically different in the 1970s TV series. While still a rebel and a loner, he is far less cold and cruel.

Musashi Tomoe is the third pilot. He is an extremely hot-blooded young man and controls the Getter machine "Bear" and Getter-3. Musashi is short and fat but also physically very strong as the leader of his prefecture's Judo team who has yet to be defeated in a match. Though he fails the physical and mental tests required to pilot Getter Robo, he makes up for it with hot-blooded spirit and stubbornness, becoming a valued member of the team. Musashi's goofy and clumsy personality forms much of the comic relief in the original series. His portrayal in the 1970s series is fairly close to the original manga, unlike many of the other characters.
