About this title

Synopsis

Although abandoned as a puppy, Happy now finds himself fit as a fiddle in the care of Miku's family. He plays with the youngster, goes on walks with the effusive Father, and munches on yummy food prepared by Mother. As such, there is no doubt that he is having the time of his life. Unfortunately, when Father develops a chronic disease, the strong familial bonds in the household slowly deteriorate. Little by little, the family grows more disjointed—until there is no one but Happy and Father left. Unable to earn a living in his condition, Father resolves himself and his dog to one aim: to travel to the far south. Hoshi Mamoru Inu was published in English as Stargazing Dog by NBM Publishing on November 1, 2011. It was also published in Brazilian Portuguese by JBC in September 2014; in Spanish by Ponent Mon in July 2013, and by Editorial Kamite on March 7, 2015; and in Polish by Kotori on April 8, 2022. A live-action drama movie of the same name was released in 2011.

Happy is an Akita dog and the narrator of the first part of the story. As a puppy, he is left in a box on the side of the road and picked up by Miku, who names him "Happy" and pleads with her parents to keep him. After several years of living with the family, the father sets out on a roadtrip and takes Happy with him. Happy enjoys the times when he and father go out on walks and father talks to him. Father is an older man who agrees to his daughter's pleas to keep the newfound puppy, Happy. Despite having chronic heart issues, he still smokes; it is hinted that his eyesight is deteriorating as well. As Miku grows up, rifts appear in the family due to the father's illness and his detached approach towards their lives, culminating in an impromptu road trip with Happy after his wife demands a divorce and he is forced to leave their home. When Okutsu investigates his past, he discovers that the father used the fake name "Yoshio Maeda" when selling his possessions. No voice actors have been added to this character. Okutsu is a case worker for the government, who lives and works in the area of the camp where father and Happy make their final stop. He is a quiet man who lives on his own and spends his free time working on his grandparents' house and his car, and reading books from the local library.
