Happy is a pug who's spent his first two years of his life at a pet store, waiting to be picked up yet always being overlooked in favor of other puppies. One day, he is seen by Tetsuo, who steals him in order to not appear suspicious to the police, trying to appear as a regular child walking his dog instead of a runaway. Not to be confused with from the first part of the story, who is an Akita Inu. No voice actors have been added to this character. Tetsuo first appears as a dirty, malnourished runaway who is stopped by Father from stealing food from a grocery store. He hitches a ride with father and Happy for awhile, ultimately stealing his wallet and setting off on his own to Hokkaido. From Tetsuo's perspective, we see that his father is not in the picture and his mother, Kay, often leaves Tetsuo for days without food in their small, dirty apartment, to go and meet men. After she abandons him for good, Tetsuo decides to go to his maternal grandfather in Hokkaido and picks up a pug along the way in order to not stand out to the police. He ends up naming the pug "Happy" and quickly bonds with him, despite only seeing him as a tool at first. No voice actors have been added to this character. Ms. Nagano is an old woman who's lived her life on her own, not depending on others — however, this lifestyle has also lead to her being seen as a "bitter old hag" by the neighbors, who generally avoid approaching her. She takes pity on a feeble, sickly abandoned Akita puppy and takes him back to her place, where the two spend their time watching over each other while waiting for death.
