Synopsis

One of the first Super Robot manga and the one that introduced most of the traits of the Mecha genre. Constructed with the Super-Alloy Z, Mazinger was built by Professor Juzo Kabuto as a weapon against the Mechanical Beasts of the evil Dr. Hell. Koji Kabuto, the grandson of Professor Kabuto, becomes the pilot of Mazinger Z when his grandfather is killed, and battles from there on against Dr. Hell and his allies. This is the first series that introduced the concept of a pilot inside a Mecha, which all series from then on have followed. (Source: MU)

Mazinger Z Kouji Kabuto is the protagonist of the show, an average student with great skill in driving motorcycles. He lived with his brother Shiro and his grandfather Juuzo, after his parents were apparently killed in a lab accident caused by his grandfather. One day, Koji receives a call from his grandfather to meet him at his mountain cabin. Just as Kouji arrives however, the cabin explodes. Searching the remains, he uncovers a hidden doorway into the mountain and inside, he finds his dying grandfather who tells him with his dying wish to pilot "Mazinger Z" and stop a man named Dr. Hell. Kouji continues into the hidden lab and discovers the huge, humanoid robot Mazinger Z, and the hover pilder which is used to control it. Honoring his grandfather's last wish, he joins up with the Photon Power Labs and fights the forces of Dr. Hell with his Mazinger Z. Grendizer A supporting character, primarily acting as back up for Duke Fleed, the series protagonist. He enters the war against the Vegan Empire with Duke Fleed and his allies. He initially pilots the TFO, a small recon unit with minimal battle capacity. Later, he fights more directly alongside Duke with the Double Spazer, a jet-like machine with greater firepower that attaches itself to Grendizer and grants it flight capability ala the Scrander. His personality is reminiscent of how he is portrayed in the original Mazinger Z anime. He is stubborn, hot blooded, direct, and confrontational. However, he has matured a bit, as was evident in Great Mazinger. He is still likely to be the first to charge into battle, but is more open to reason now. Shin Mazinger The protagonist of the series. Kouji lives with his younger brother Shiro and his grandfather Juuzo in their manor in Atami. Though his grandfather caused the accident that apparently killed his parents, Kouji feels no ill-will towards him and in fact holds him in high regard, attacking anyone who dares insults his grandfather. During the Ashura Corps first attack on Atami, Juuzo sends out the hover pilder to Kouji and tells him to use it to quickly fly home. Just as he reaches the manor, it is utterly obliterated as Juuzo sends out his life's work from his underground lab, the super robot Mazinger Z. After docking the pilder with Mazinger's head, Juuzo tells Kouji that with Mazinger, he has the power to do anything he wants with the world—he could even become a god or the devil. As the ultimate penance for accidentally killing his parents, Juuzo will make his grandson superhuman. Having been granted this new-found power, Kouji decides that he will use it to fight the Kabuto family's long-time enemy—Dr. Hell—and his army of mechanical beasts.

Mazinger Z: Boss is a young, delinquent from Mazinger Z who served as the comic relief characters for the series. Boss began as a bully and Kabuto Kouji's rival at school, but quickly became an ally, often scouting for Mazinger Z on his motorcycle, or getting into some sort of slapstick mischief. The two members of Boss's gang were Nuke and Mucha. In Great Mazinger,Bakarasu and Kouji's younger brother Shiro also join the gang. He's also Sayaka Yumi's long-time school friend and has a huge crush on her. About two-thirds of the way through Mazinger Z, Boss and his gang found an abandoned warehouse full of junk, and kidnapped the scientists at the Photonic Research Institute to build Boss his own giant robot, Boss Borot, out of the junk in the warehouse. also his cousin misato who is a former model comes to work in the photon plant she does domestic work cleaning, cooking etc her behavior is the opposite of sayaka Boss also made occasional appearances in Grendizer, and was one of the main characters in the Mazinkaiser mini-series. Shin Mazinger: In Shin Mazinger, Boss plays a smaller role than before. He is now the boss of all the delinquent gangs in Japan, and comes to Atami at the beginning of the series because it's the only area of Japan without a gang leader. After arriving, he identifies Kouji as the strongest student in the area and decides that by defeating him, he'll become Atami's leader, but before he can do this, the Ashura Corps launch their first attack on Atami and they are forced into hiding. After the attack, Boss, Nuke and Mucha are now forcibly employed at the Kurogane House, having run up an enormous tab by staying at the spa for too long. They also apparently do some work for the Photon Power Labs, as they are seen using a large construction robot around the area. This robot is later used as the basis for their fighting mecha Boss Borot. Boss also continues his friendly rivalry with Kouji, and occassionally helps him out throughout the series.

A former colleague of Kouji's grandfather Juzo, Professor Yumi is the current head of the Photon Power Research Laboratory. He is the father of Sayaka Yumi and also built her robot, Aphrodai A. In Shin Mazinger Shougeki! Z-Hen, his name was changed to Yannosuke, despite all the previous Mazinger series referring to him at Gennosuke.
