About this title
Synopsis
High school student Yuugi Mutou spends his days being bullied between classes and his nights playing board games and solving puzzles in his bedroom. Yuugi's penchant for gameplay comes from his grandfather, whose game shop also serves as a house for the two. One night, Yuugi manages to solve the Millennium Puzzle, a seemingly impossible challenge that awakens his inner darkness and converts it into an alternate persona: Yami Yuugi. Transforming into the more bold and dangerous persona against his will in moments of great distress, Yuugi begins to moonlight as a vengeful vigilante, challenging bullies and evil-doers to risky games where failure results in fates worse than death. Yuugi and his alter ego befriend some of the very students who once bullied him, forming unbreakable companionships with them. But the group must contend with villains far deadlier than the high school punks they originally rallied against, enemies who use games for nefarious purposes and threaten Yuugi and his friends' very lives. Dark Yuugi3441 fan favoritesExternal profileAge: 3000+ Blood type: A Height: 153 cm Weight: 42 kg Yami Yuugi is the spirit of the ancient Pharaoh residing in the Millennium Puzzle. His past is shrouded in mystery. 3,000 (5,000 in the dub) years later, Yuugi Mutou, after trying to solve the puzzle for eight years, awakens the Pharaoh from his slumber, although Yuugi does not realize this until much later in the story. At the end of Duelist Kingdom, the Pharaoh asks Yuugi to help him recover his memories and Yuugi agrees to help him. In the early manga, Dark Yugi starts out as an merciless vigilante. He emerges to deal justice to people who trespass the souls of Yugi and his friends. Although his acts are righteous, he lives up to his namesake of Dark; his Penalty Game punishments are usually very brutal. Later, while living inside Yugi's body, he seems to become more of a caring, nice and friendly disposition, even though he always had that in him, and the friendship of Yugi's friends had helped it be revealed to others. Yami is a strong, powerful and skilled Pharaoh. He attempts to balance darkness and evil in his use of the Shadow Magic from his Millennium Item. Unlike Yami Bakura and Yami Marik, he never uses it for personal gain, instead preferring to help others in need, and to inflict punishment only on people who have severely wronged innocents. He is slightly reserved, as he doesn't reveal his existence to Yugi or his friends. At first Yugi feared Yami Yugi, but after Yugi admits to thinking "another Yugi" exists inside him, his friends become aware of his existence and accepted him as a friend. Even before, Yami is extremely protective of Yugi. Yami's pride is his greatest strength and weakness. Initially he refuses to lose games, because it would cause him to lose the chance to save Grandpa. This has caused him to almost kill Seto Kaiba by attacking his monster while he stood on a ledge and the shockwaves could cause him to fall if Yugi chose to win the Duel (in the Japanese version, Kaiba threatened to commit suicide should he lose). Learning how to lose became an essential aspect of Yami's journey, which he is tested in the Battle Ritual. Yami is also wise and intelligent. He knows all the rules and details of how the game is played, as well as those of all games. He also knows several special game techniques, such as the Double Hit dice roll technique, which, when two dice are used and the one with the weak spin stops first, lets him make the dice that's already spinning hit the one that isn't, allowing him to change its number, which is done by bumping the field with a body part, e.g the elbow. Despite being an ancient Pharaoh, Yami is very quick to learning and utilizing modern technology. He, despite initial shock, was able to quickly grasp the concept of holographic technology, how Dueling Arenas and field Power Bonuses worked, was able to use the Dungeon Dice Monsters Help computer to quickly formulate strategies, and was able to use Duel Disks flawlessly on the first try. Yami is also capable of translating the hieroglyphics of the Egyptians, figuring out the riddles or clues and what they mean. Through Yugi and his friends, Yami Yugi learns the values and powers of friendship and unity. After seeing Yugi overcome Marik in his Duel with Jonouchi, who has been possessed, Yami thinks to himself, he learned something from Yugi; that in kindness lies the greatest strength of all; one day Yugi will surpass him. Also, Yami has been protecting Yugi, and Yugi has learned from him the spirit of "never shrink back no matter how difficult it is". At the end of the story, Yugi grows enough to be self-reliant, and Yami's soul gets freedom. Battle City Doma Arc Memory World (Source: Yugipedia)
Seto Kaiba3291 fan favoritesExternal profileBirthday: October 25 Height: 186 cm Weight: 65 kg Blood type: A Favourite food: Beef fillet, Filet Mignon with Foie Gras sauce Least favourite food: Oden Kaiba is the rival of Yugi Mutou and Dark Yugi. He was first introduced as a prodigious, cold-hearted gamer who stopped at nothing to achieve his goals, even resorting to seemingly killing his opponents. He is also Mokuba's older brother and the current majority shareholder and CEO of his own multi-national gaming company, KaibaCorp, and aims to become the world's greatest player of Duel Monsters. Following his second Duel with Yugi, he was left in a coma where he reassembled the shattered puzzle of his heart and emerged less evil. Though reformed, Kaiba retains his arrogance and rivalry with Yugi, but regains compassion for his younger brother, Mokuba. He can be condescending, selfish, no-nonsense, and narcissistic, but, as Dark Yugi has said he can be oblivious at times. However, it is stated by Mokuba that ever since being adopted by Gozaburo, Kaiba became much colder than he used to be. Despite this, Kaiba still has strong brotherly instincts for Mokuba and will put his life in danger in a heart beat to safeguard Mokuba's life. Apart from Mokuba, Kaiba has compassion for children—especially orphans (as he himself was one and knew what it felt like). Kaiba is willing to put his life or other lives on the line to achieve his goals or settle a conflict. He showed almost no fear when Dark Yugi warned him about the possibility of a fatal outcome of a Shadow Game and tries to kill Yugi and his friends during Death-T. However, when he learned that death was the price to be paid in Yugi's Duel with the brainwashed Jonouchi, Kaiba was sickened by the prospect, claiming that even at his worst he would not have done this and attempted to stop the Duel. Like the Pharaoh, pride is Kaiba's strength and weakness; he never backs down from a fight and gives everything he can in a Duel. This results in his sense of superiority and sense of arrogance, making it extremely difficult to earn his respect, and causes him to look down on and treat others as inferior until they do so. This gives him difficulty when forced to rely on others and work as a team. His pride in himself and his accomplishments are prominent parts of his character throughout the series, and he reacts harshly to those who threaten or infringe on it. (Source: Wikipedia, Yugipedia)
Katsuya Jounouchi990 fan favoritesExternal profileAge: 16 Birthday: 25 January Blood type: B Height: 178 cm Weight: 62 kg Favourite food: Steak and shrimp, curry rice Jounouchi is Yuugi's best friend. Jonouchi is loyal, heroic, good-natured, brave, funny, friendly, kind-hearted, and loving. At the beginning Jounouchi used to bully Yuugi. When Ushio beats up Jonouchi and Honda, Yugi stands up for them, and it's then that Jonouchi realizes that he was jealous of Yugi's "treasure" all along. Later on that night, he retrieves the last Millennium Puzzle piece and brings it back to Yugi's house, where Yugi completes it and challenges Ushio to the first Shadow Game of the series. Jonouchi is touched by Yugi's behavior towards him and they become loyal friends, forming his own "treasure." Jonouchi is good at fist fighting and is usually able to take on people bigger than him, such as Bandit Keith (in the second anime, this quality is underplayed). Though not exactly the best gamer in Domino, he develops a better liking to them thanks to Yugi, and he's managed to use his strong points to help Yugi come through in earlier story lines. Later on, he develops an interest in the Duel Monsters game, the latest fad at the time. Though unskilled at first, with Yugi's help, he trains for the Duelist Kingdom and Battle City tournaments for his sister; progressively getting better throughout the series to the point where he could be called a match for Dark Yugi. Jonouchi is shown to have a very kind heart, be selfless and caring, considerate, and eager willingness to help and save those he deeply cares for and loves, but he also demonstrates a near lack of modesty and can be rather rash at times, making him a source of comic relief. He also has an extreme fear of ghosts, mummies, and anything else that could be considered 'creepy'. Jonouchi notes that, before he met Yugi, he was never really motivated for anything. As the story progressed, he learned to channel his anger into games instead of his fists. (Source: Wikipedia, Yugipedia)
Yuugi Mutou728 fan favoritesExternal profileBirthday: June 4 Blood type: AB Yuugi Mutou is the main protagonist of Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters. At the start of the series, he is a shy boy who is really short for his age, something he always gets teased about in school. For this reason, he was always alone. However, his grandfather gives him the Millennium Puzzle prior to the story's time line and Yuugi is told that if he solved it, one wish of his could be granted. He manages to solve the Millennium Puzzle and he asks for friends and his wish is immediately granted. He also awakens the spirit residing in the Puzzle, but Yuugi is not aware of this until much later in the story. When Yuugi does become aware, he and the spirit become very close, with him calling the spirit "Mou Hitori No Boku"—The Other Me—and the spirit calling him "Aibou'—Partner. Yugi then becomes a vessel for the spirit and he is told that his duty is to help the spirit find his lost memories. With the help of his friends, he helps the Pharaoh regain his memories while overcoming the most difficult of situations. Yuugi is mostly seen living with his grandfather, since his parents are mostly on business trips. His mother, Ashita, makes a very brief appearance in the beginning of the second season, when Yuugi argues with the spirit. Yuugi is also very gifted as a duelist with the Duel Monsters card game, thanks to the expertise and upbringing of his grandfather. Yuugi's deck, throughout the series, was really his grandfather's, since his grandfather gave him his deck in episode 1 to battle Seto Kaiba. However, in the last season—Pharaoh's Memory—he uses his own deck, which contains magicians, spell-casters, and machines. Yuugi is also seen as a "Ladies' Man" in the series, according to the KCGP filler. However, from the beginning, it has been obvious that he has a crush on Anzu Mazaki, his childhood friend. Yu-Gi-Oh! GX Yuugi Mutou makes several apperances in Yu-Gi-Oh! GX. He is first seen as a grown adult in the first episode, whom Judai Yuki runs into on his way to the entrance exam at Duel Academy. Yuugi then hands him Winged Kuriboh and walks away. There are also several mentions of him throughout the series. Yu-Gi-Oh! The Movie - Ultra Fusion! Bonds Over Time and Space! Yuugi is one the main characters in this 10th Anniversary special of Yu-Gi-Oh! He, along with Judai Yuki of Yu-Gi-Oh! GX and Yusei Fudou of Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's, battle Paradox in order to save Duel Monsters and the existence of time itself.
Anzu Mazaki95 fan favoritesExternal profileAge: 16 Birthday: 18 August Blood type: O Height: 165 cm Weight: 47 kg Favourite food: Ramen Least favourite food: Grated yam Anzu is the childhood friend of Yugi Mutou. She becomes a good friend to Katsuya Jonouchi and Hiroto Honda, though she is not fond of them at first. In the first series anime, Miho Nosaka is also one of Anzu's friends. Anzu does not usually play games with Yugi and his friends, though she is once shown beating Jonouchi. In the manga, especially in the beginning, Anzu has a spunky, tomboyish personality, and in the first chapter, frightens Honda and Jonouchi into leaving the room after they bully Yugi. Anzu possesses a very kind-hearted, strong-willed, and supportive personality. In the Duel Monsters anime, she and Honda, are basically cheerleaders for Yugi and Jonouchi whenever they duel, but she has proven herself adept at dueling as well, and usually keeps up with the going-ons of a duel. She is more feminine, polite, and has a stronger sense of faith and friendship for her group of friends, often serving as the mother/sister figure for the boys. She is known among fans of the Duel Monsters English anime for her "friendship speeches." Anzu is athletic and holds jobs to save money in order to attend a dance school in New York City. In the beginning of the series, she is revealed to be working at "Burger World". By Volume 4 in the manga, Anzu is fired from that job for punching a customer who had pinched her buttocks. She gets a job at KaibaCorp afterwards and encounters her friends at KaibaLand. In the Toei anime, Anzu, Honda, and Miho work at Burger World, with Miho and Honda working to support Anzu. Once Burger World closes, Honda and Miho work for a beef bowl restaurant. In the opening scenes of the 1999 film Yugi and his friends discover that she works at "Duel Monsters Center," a Duel Monsters parlor. She already knows Shōgo Aoyama, a regular of the parlor and Yugi's neighbor. While responding to a fan mail asking him why Yugi and Anzu are not in a romantic relationship, Takahashi stated that the relationship between Anzu and both Yugis is "pretty much a love triangle." He added that Yugi and Anzu "always" act in a "very careful" manner in front of one another, so they cannot admit their feelings for one another. Anzu's first Deck is a Fairy Deck. It focuses on Light-Attribute Fairy monsters, and spells to enhance them. Her second Deck is a Spellcaster Deck. Almost all the cards are devoted to the Spellcaster theme, like Fire Sorcerer, Maha Vailo and the Dark Magician Girl because of her one-sided love with both Yugis. She duels once in the manga and three times during the course of the second anime series. During the Virtual World arc, she wields a deck that parallels Yugi's Spellcaster deck, albelit with a more feminine touch. (Source: Wikipedia, Yugipedia)
Hiroto Honda19 fan favoritesExternal profileBirthday: 19 April Blood type: A Height: 180 cm Weight: 65 kg Favourite food: Okonomiyaki Least favourite food: Natto Honda, who is in class 1-B at Domino High School, is a boy who became a friend of Yugi, Jonouchi, and Anzu. Later on, he becomes a friend to Bakura as well. In the manga, Honda starts out as Jonouchi's street thug buddy and also (at first) has a crush on Miho Nosaka. In the 1998 anime, he is the head of the school's beautician department. Along with Jonouchi, he was saved from the bully Ushio by Yugi, though he still dislikes Yugi at first. After admitting his love for Miho Nosaka to Jonouchi, he is convinced by him to ask Yugi for his help in writing a love letter to her in the form of a puzzle. When the vain teacher Ms. Chono confiscated the puzzle, threatening to punish Miho if the secret admirer does not come clean, Yugi and Jonouchi stood up for him by saying they were the ones who wrote it. Ms. Chono decides to put together the puzzle to find out who the sender is anyway, and Dark Yugi secretly turns it into a Shadow Game, shattering Ms. Chono's pretty face as the Penalty Game. From then on, Honda warms up to Yugi and becomes one of his dearest friends, despite the fact that Miho later turns him down when he asks her out directly. Honda always helps Jounouchi or Yugi when they are in need. He's a friend to the end. In the 1998 anime Honda has a recurring crush on Miho, but he does not have involvement with Ms. Chono. In the English version of the Duel Monsters anime, his past was heavily edited, to remove the violent fighting bits, and his importance is slightly down-played. In the Duel Monsters anime, he has a large crush on Jonouchi's sister Shizuka and his origin story with Miho is never mentioned. He also has a strong rivalry in the English version with Ryuji Otogi and regularly competes with him for Shizuka's affections. (Source: Wikipedia, Yugipedia)
